Lot 1

1816 N-1 R4+ PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of frosty lighter steel brown and tan in protected areas. There is just a touch of friction on the highpoints and a few trivial contact marks scattered over both sides. The best identifying mark is a spot of darker olive brown toning between star 6 and the tip of the coronet. M-LDS with rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 11 and a fine die crack through the top of NITED. The chin is a bit sunken, as usual for this variety. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#4, his photo #27325. Our grade is AU50. This attractive cent comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Newcomb-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65 for the variety. PCGS #36523. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
