Lot 886

1801 NC-4 R7 G4+. Sharpness VG7 but the planchet is covered with microscopic roughness and porosity, strongest on the reverse. No verdigris, but there are several old, light scratches on the portrait, mostly in the hair and ribbon, plus a couple more at ES in STATES. The most significant mark is an obvious and rather deep scratch from the bottom of the O in ONE to the E in CENT. Dark steel and olive. The obverse is slightly glossy while the reverse is closer to matte. The date is bold and the legends are complete. The diagnostic die defect that connects the bases of the B & E in LIBERTY is obvious. Tied for CC#4 among only 9 examples known. The top two examples also are far from perfect with grades of VF25 net VG8 and VF20 net VG7, the significant deductions assessed for serious surface defects.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

Realized $3,565
