Lot 880

1801 S-216 R1 F15. Sharpness VF20, even better in those areas that were properly struck, but there are myriad faint hairline scratches on the portrait. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and very attractive. Glossy medium chocolate brown with frosty luster peeking through in protected areas on the reverse. MDS, Breen state II. This cent was struck with the dies not in correct axial alignment (die faces not parallel). This caused significant weakness at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse. LIBERTY and the denominator are barely visible as a result. Breen mentions this feature is his description of state II. Pieces struck with the dies so far out of alignment can rightly be called mint errors, and this is an excellent example of that type of mistake.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

Realized $196
