Lot 668

1829 C-1 R1. VG-10. Flipover Double Struck over Off-Center Obverse Brockage. Slightly glossy steel brown and light olive with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints thanks to an old cleaning. The surfaces are decent but do show traces of extremely fine granularity in protected areas. The notable marks are a rim nick over star 7 and another below the bust tip. This piece would be relatively insignificant as a generic example of a common date, but that's not the case thanks to multiple mint errors that occurred during the strike(s). This piece was struck at least twice, possibly three times. The final strike is normal, but clear undertype of earlier strikes remains on both sides. Evidence of an 80% off center obverse brockage is obvious at stars 9-13. On the reverse there is also clear undertype of a 15-20% off center impression of a normal obverse. The 18 and upper half of the 2 of the date is located over OF and a trail of dentils fades out as it extends through AME. Obviously the undertype on the obverse and reverse do not line up, so it would appear there were more than two strikes involved. Regardless, it's clear that things got really jammed up in the press when this piece was struck. A great multiple mint error.
Estimated Value $250 - 400.
