Lot 625

1856 N-22 R5 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with underlying faded red in the protected areas on both sides. Possibly retoned long ago but the eye appeal is excellent. The only notable marks are a thin arc of darker steel toning through TED-STATES-OF-A and a short, light scratch well hidden in the hair under ER in LIBERTY. EDS, die state a. The dies are sharp and fine diagonal die lapping lines cover the obverse fields. This is the discovery coin for the die variety; confirmed by Reiver and Bland in 11/1980. Our grade is MS60, CC#1 in the Grellman census. And it comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 64. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
