Lot 590

1854 N-6 R1 MS60+. Bright original mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints, 75% of the original color remaining, mostly on the obverse. Would rate a much higher grade if not for several carbon spots scattered on the upper half of the obverse, including one that covers star 5. Looks like your classic "sneeze victim." Too bad, since this example has far more mint color than any other example known of the variety. As it is, it’s still tied for CC#3 with several other examples. MDS, die state b. There is a tiny lump close under the tip of the nose and the die lines from the dentils at star 2 are dull. DWH #3191.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
Ex Scotsman Auction Co., 7/25/05:164-Evan Kopald (via Bob Grellman & Chris McCawley) 5/06.
