Lot 575

1853 N-27 R2 MS64. Lustrous bright mint red fading to steel brown, about 70% of the original color remaining. The only defects are faint traces of an old fingerprint at stars 7 & 8, a speck of darker toning in the field close before the upper lip, and another near the leaf under the left foot of the A in STATES. MDS, die state c, with a tiny rim cud break just below star 3 and the obverse die obviously misaligned to K-3. The reverse is properly centered on the planchet. The neck and cheek are covered with microscopic low spots from debris on the die, with similar low spots over CENT, all as struck. Outstanding eye appeal for the grade, close to gem. Tied for CC#2. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS66RB (NGC label included, but misattributed on the label as N-26). DWH #2227.
Estimated Value $600-UP.
