Bancroft, George: Beautiful Letter Signed with 16 Words in His Hand as Secretary of the Navy + ALS by Vice-Admiral David Dixon Porter (1800-1891) As US Secretary of the Navy (March 1845-September 1846)George Bancroft established the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and issued standing orders under which Captain John Sloat seized California ports on the outbreak of the Mexican War. Beautifully penned, letter signed as Secretary of the Navy with 16 words in his hand, 1 page 9¾ x 8" dated Feb. 26, 1846. Marked "Unofficial" and addressed to Franklin Buchanan, the 1st Superintendent at Annapolis asking advice on whether a court martial or a severe reprimand would be the proper punishment for two young men. Excellent condition with bold signature by Bancroft.

(1813-1891) US Admiral who received the Thanks of Congress for his role in capturing Fort Fisher and became a Vice-Admiral and superintendent of the US Naval Academy. Letter to unnamed correspondent denouncing a bill on its way to Congress which he calls "a piece of deception from beginning to end" and then doubles down calling it a "tremendous fraud".
