Lot 472

1856 N-22 R5 Italic 5 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with hints of very faded mint color showing in protected areas on the reverse. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. There is a touch of friction on the highpoints and a few trivial contact marks scattered over both sides. A pair of faint horizontal nicks right of the lower right point of star 1 and some small nicks midway between star 2 and the chin can help identify this cent. EDS (the earliest seen), die state a, with sharp diagonal die lines in the fields on the obverse. Our grade is AU50+, CC#3 for this tough die variety in the Grellman census. Removed from an ANACS slab graded MS60 (ANACS label SX8973 included). The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 2 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Joe V. Dooley, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 1/11/1997:725-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (includes the Dooley collection envelope and lot ticket).
