Hughes, Howard (1905-76) American industrialist, aviator, film producer and director, and philanthropist; known in his later years for his eccentric behavior. Hughes signed in blue ink on a folded 10½ x 8 in. sheet of tan paper. Hughes' attorney, T.A. Slack signed on the same piece of paper and added the date, Aug. 11, 1947. With a 10 x 8 in. photo of Hughes (T.A. Slack is seated at right), along with a newspaper photo explaining that Hughes was composing a statement to the press after the Senate investigation of his plane contracts was called off. A copy of the Associated Press story that accompanies the photo gives the date of this photo and the adjournment of the War Investigating Subcommittee as August 11, 1947.
