Why the "No Motto"? President Theodore Roosevelt objected to the name of the deity on America's coinage. At his request, it wasn't displayed on the initial double eagles of 1907-08. But congress, reacting to public outrage, instructed the Mint to return IN GOD WE TRUST to the double eagles in mid-1908 (PCGS # 9142) .
