Lot 317

1831 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. Large letters. VG-8. An exceedingly rare die variety in any grade! Quickly identifiable by the large 1s over small 1s in the date, and short arrows on the reverse. After years of searching, this variety is needed by a great many quarter specialists. In the John Reich Capped Bust Quarter Census of 1998, only 4 specimens were reported, the finest a VF-20. This particular coin has natural dark gray fields and lighter devices. Identifiable by a small cluster of marks in the field before Liberty's eye and the sixth star, and on the reverse by a minor tick in the field above the left wing of the eagle and his neck. The upper lettering is nearly worn into the rim. Expect spirited bidding when this one crosses the block, and only one lucky collector will collect this prize, and many will be disappointed that they were not the victors in this chase. Let the fireworks begin.
This is one of the great prizes of the entire Capped Bust quarter series, with only 4 varieties that still are called Rarity-7, with less than a dozen known in all grades.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Purchased privately in 2000, and from an old quarter collection assembled years ago.

Realized $2,530
