Kingdom of Macedon. Demetrios Poliorketes, 306-283 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.11 g) minted in Macedon (possibly Amphipolis) c. 291-290 BC. Diademed head right of Demetrios Poliorketes, wearing bull's horn. Reverse: Poseidon seated left on a rock; he holds aplustre and trident; in central left field, Phrygian helmet. Newell (The Coinages of Demetrius Poliorcetes) 136 (plate XIV, 3). Rare. A few spots of encrustations, mainly on the reverse. Outstanding portrait. Extremely Fine.

At this time Thebes was under siege by Demetrios, and eventually fell to his forces. All of Alexander III's heirs, including Demetrios, spent their lives guarding borders and attacking neighbors in their lust for power. Alexander's dream was lost.
