Lot 2145

1801 NC-3 R6+ Error Fraction 1/000. About Good-3. Sharpness VF20 but there is a large, deep corrosion spot on the obverse that obliterates about 20-25% of that side. The remainder of the planchet is covered with light roughness and shows a few marks as well, but these flaws pale by comparison to the obverse crater. The deeply corroded patch on the obverse contains a reddish substance that must have been the copper planchet before it was transformed by some chemical process into its present form. The rest of the coin is a rather glossy mix of chocolate and olive brown. Too bad about the crater because this piece has more detail than the Sheldon plate coin for this very rare variety.
Estimated Value $500 - 1,000.

Realized $2,100
