Poe, John W. -- Documents Signed by the Sheriff of Lincoln County, NM, Who Was With Pat Garrett When He Killed Billy the Kid, Plus J.H. Blazer DS. Three documents, two of them signed by John W. Poe (1851-1923) as sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico. He was sheriff from 1882-85. He was a deputy sheriff of Sheriff Pat Garrett's and was present when Garrett killed Billy the Kid on July 14, 1881. The three documents are (1) an 1884 document signed as Sheriff, 8½ x 7", certifying that he had executed the demand by the Probate Court to sell all of the goods of Andreas Bernal, deceased. (2) a May 1885 Territory of New Mexico subpoena, folio, for four men to appear in court to testify before the Grand Jury; Poe signed that he had executed the subpoena.(3) The third document, which is on John Poe's letterhead as Sheriff and Tax Collector of Lincoln County, 11 x 8½", is signed by Arcadio Sais, as Treasurer of Lincoln County, and acknowledges receipt of $15 from Poe, who was the custodian of the estate of the late Thomas Estil. One tape repair to first document; otherwise, all three are fine.
Accompanied by a document signed by Dr. Joseph H. Blazer, folio, Lincoln County, NM, being a bond whereby Blazer is taking guardianship of three minor children. Blazer was a dentist who owned a sawmill and trading post that supplied beef to the Mescalero Apaches. Billy the Kid was wounded in the arm at Blazer's mill in 1778 during the Lincoln County War.
