Lot 194

1835 C-1 R1 Repunched 5 PCGS graded MS66 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel and light olive with nearly a third of the original mint red remaining visible on both sides. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost, even the highest points of the devices, and this half cent has outstanding eye appeal. There are no identifying marks other than a curved planchet clip that affects the dentils at the top of the obverse and the opposing dentils under the wreath stem. The dentils directly across from the clip are softly struck, the so-called "Blakesly effect" seen on genuine planchet clip error strikes made with a tight collar in the coining chamber. LDS, Manley state 2.0, with more extensive die clashmarks on both sides, particularly before the neck and chin. The repunching on the 5 is still clear. Our grade is MS65. The attribution, "Mint Error" status, and Green Tree Collection provenance are all noted on the PCGS label. The finest "non-error" strike of the variety is graded MS65+RB at PCGS. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
