Handy, W.C (1873-1958) Influential American blues composer and musician, known as the "Father of the Blues." Sheet music for "Way Down South Where the Blues Began" inscribed and signed, "To Mr. Gilbert Kurland / W.C. Handy 'Saint Louis Blues' 7-21-'32." Sound engineer Kurland was twice nominated for an Academy Award. With a Handy Brothers Music Co. flyer offering W. C. Handy arrangements of Negro Spirituals and an "Aframerican Hymn."
