Lot 164

1848 N-32 R5 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Very attractive frosty light chocolate brown and steel with generous traces of mint red remaining, especially on the reverse. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers mint state eye appeal, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a dull scratch on the cheek, a minor nick on the tip of the chin, and a planchet flake on the throat (as struck). The strike is sharp in most places but the hair at the top of the ear was a bit softly impressed as was the upper loop of the wreath ribbon. EDS with slightly reflective fields, especially on the obverse. Fine diagonal die polishing lines cover much of the fields on the obverse. A great cent. Our grade is AU50, CC#1 for this rare variety in the Grellman census where only 2 examples grade above VF. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

Ex Tom Keenan (via J. R. Grellman) 5/2013-Fred Iskra Collection.
