Lot 142

1812 S-289 R1 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. Choice lustrous light to medium chocolate brown and steel. Satiny flowline luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. Peeps of golden tan faded down from mint color can be found in a few of the protected areas on the reverse. Looks choice mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the hair. Essentially flawless; a trio of microscopic ticks on the inner point of star 13 are the only marks, and they are difficult to see with a strong glass. E-MDS, Breen state II. The repunching on the 2 is still clearly visible and the fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #35046. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. A wonderful cent that has solid mint state eye appeal. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 36508) Value $15,000 - UP
Ex Stack's (privately) 9/26/1988-Gilbert Steinberg, Superior 9/16/1996:1576-Douglas F. Bird Collection (lot ticket included).
