Mitsuke Shimizu. Mist in the Mountains. Oil on canvas, c. 1950s, 19 ¼" x 23¼". Matted and framed to an overall size of 26½" x 30½". Shimizu (1905-1987) was considered one of Japan's finest landscape artists. He studied under the legendary Gukaryo Nakamura and was accepted into the Jigenkai Kaiyu Art Association.He made numerous trips to Europe in search of broader scenic challenges; his landscapes incorprate Japanese mysticism into scenes reminiscent of Switzerland and Austria. Several of his paintings hang permanently in the National Gallery in Kyoto.
