Ionia, Teos. 540-478 BC. AR Drachm (5.94g). Griffin with curled wings seated right, forepaw raised.Reverse Quadripartite incuse square. SNG Cop. 1433; Balcer 32ff. About Extremely Fine.

The Persians occupied Teos in 544 BC, close to the time when these archaic coins were minted, and most of the inhabitants fled to Abdera. All the coins of Teos are therefore quite scarce today. Contemporary accounts extol the beauty of the renown temple at Teos dedicated to Dionysos.
