1838. PCGS graded MS-64. This is the first year of issue of the new Christian Gobrecht design, which replaced the Capped Bust style mid year in 1838. The strike is a trifle soft on the stars and a few other design elements, but all the important design elements are present. Its is noteworthy that Gobrecht changed the lower reverse design to read Quar. Dol. from 25 Cents on the prior design, a change which seems a bit poorly thought out unless one is determined to have these coins known as "quarters". Nice light even toning on both sides.
