Lot 203
1739 Higley Copper with Broad Axe Breen-242, Freidus 3.2-D PCGS graded G4. Slightly glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are nearly smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris, which is quite unusual for these extremely rare early coppers. However the coin is well worn and there are a few dull dents on both sides. The deer and legend (III) are clear, but only portions of the other legends remain visible. The axe is weak but most of it can be made out with a bit of effort, and at least a third of the letters in J CUT MY WAY THROUGH are readable although several are faint or incomplete. Only faint traces of the date remain visible. In spite of the wear and marks, this is still a quite acceptable example of the "Broad Axe" type, a "Redbook" variety that is missing from most advanced collections. Records indicate that as many as 15 Broad Axe Higley coppers are known, but most come with the undated (1737) obverse. And several of those are impounded in museum collections. A rare opportunity for the serious collector of Early American coinage. The attribution and Royse-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Listed on page 51 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-9 Rarity-3 PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown and steel. Frost shows in protected areas and this piece is very nice for the grade. The only marks are a tiny rim bruise under the shoulder and a larger one at the top of the staff on the reverse. Die clashmarks are present on the obverse and the reverse shows some fine die rust and a couple die cracks. A very nice example of the type and the so-called "Stern Head" variety. Listed on page 51 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $600 - UP

Listed on page 52 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $800 - UP

1779 Rhode Island Ship Token without Wreath Breen-1139 PCGS graded VF30, CAC Approved. Variety struck in brass with VLUGTENDE removed from below the ship. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter golden tan in protected areas. No marks or other defects, but there is a bit of dirt caked into protected areas. Lot 207
1783 Chalmers Shilling with Short Worm Breen-1011 PCGS graded VF30, CAC Approved. Attractive medium steel gray with lighter silvery gray toning on the devices. The surfaces are smooth and this piece offers great eye appeal for the grade. The strike is well balanced and there are only a few minor contact marks. The only notable marks are a line of very light scuffs in the wreath under LIS in ANNAPOLIS, and you will need a good glass to see them. Obvious doubling is visible on most of the letters of CHALMERS. These were struck by John Chalmers, a silversmith in Annapolis, Maryland, to help provide an acceptable alternative to the clipped Spanish Colonial "bits" that were prevalent at the time. The Heard provenance is noted on the PCGS label. Listed on page 53 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
