1798 NC-2 R7 Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded VG10. Slightly glossy olive and dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are covered with fine roughness under the rather glossy toning but there is no notable verdigris and the only mark is a barely visible rim bruise over the second T in STATES. Graded VF20 net VG8 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #22985. Bland says VG8 and tied for CC#1 honors. Our grade is F15 sharpness net VG8. 1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8 PCGS Genuine, AG Details, Environmental Damage. The sharpness of this cent is at least G5 and the portrait shows VG8 details, but the planchet is covered with fine to moderate roughness on all but the highpoints, which are nearly smooth. The lower part of the date is fading into the rim but it is still readable and the legends are nearly complete. Slightly glossy steel brown and chocolate with reddish steel in protected areas. A pit or depression under the N in CENT is the only notable mark. Far from perfect but still a genuine 1799/8 overdate. Our grade is net AG3. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1799 S-189 R2 PCGS Genuine, VG Details, Repaired. Slightly glossy reddish chocolate and dark steel. Much of the planchet is smooth but there is obvious light corrosion and small pits on both sides along with traces of greenish verdigris. Hairlines from a light smoothing are also visible on both sides. The date is complete and clear and most of the legends that made it onto the planchet remain visible as well. But what makes this piece so special is that it was struck about 35% off center to K-11.5 (the PCGS label says 30%). This is the only off-center 1799 cent known to us and it would be a highlight in any collection of error cents. Our grade is VG8+ sharpness net AG3+. The Mint Error and 30% Off-Center features are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1800/79 S-194 R3 Overdate 80 over 79 PCGS graded XF45. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel with traces of lighter reddish tan faded down from mint color in protected areas on the obverse. A choice example if not for a couple planchet flaws on the reverse (as struck), and they resulted in a "Mint Error on Defective Planchet" designation on the PCGS label. A subtle spot of darker steel toning under the end of the chin and a diagonal nick in the field off the lower curls are the only other notable marks. LDS, Breen state VIII early, with extensive cud breaks and cracks at the bottom of the reverse. The overdate feature is obvious. Our grade is net VF30. PCGS population (for non-errors) is 1; 7 finer, 2 in 55, 1 in 62+, 3 in 63, 1 in 64+ for the variety. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1800 S-197 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Lustrous light bluish steel brown and chocolate with delicate puffs of slightly darker olive brown on the reverse. Light bluish steel overtones cover protected areas on the obverse and a trio of tiny spots of lighter brown toning are found on the lower neck and shoulder. Satiny mint frost covers the fields on the reverse and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only contact mark of any significance at all is a faint diagonal hairline scratch in the field before the forehead. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state III, with tiny rust pits (raised lumps of metal) scattered in the hair, under the ribbons, and on the neck. The always-present diagonal breaks through the first 0 in the date are clear, the so-called "Q Variety." Our grade is AU50. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1818 N-4 R4+ PCGS graded F15. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the devices. The surfaces are smooth, void of any corrosion or verdigris. Minor contact marks consistent with the grade are scattered over both sides, none significant or distracting. A shallow planchet flake on the tip of the bust and a small pinprick under the right foot of the N in CENT can help identify this cent. LDS with a strong horizontal die crack from the dentils through star 3 into the field towards the upper lip. The O in ONE is weakly struck, which is typical for the late die state of this tough variety, but everything else is strong. A nice mid-grade example of this very scarce die variety, the toughest of the year. Our grade is F12. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $800 - UP

Lot 517
1818 N-7 R1 MS60+. Thin Date with "Twisted" Stars and Dentils. Very attractive lustrous dark bluish steel brown with lighter brown toning on the reverse and traces of mint red remaining on both sides. Sharply struck EDS with smooth, reflective fields, especially on the obverse. The obverse was struck with the normal N-7 die but the die apparently twisted upon impact (perhaps it was loose in the press) causing the date and stars to become distorted. The date digits are very thin and the points of the stars are bent, especially the outer points which are bent in a counterclockwise direction. The twisting also affected the dentils leaving them thinner than normal. This is an odd-looking cent, most likely one of the first few struck before the die was properly seated. One of only 5 known with the thin date (all in the earliest die state like this one), and the other 4 are in low grade. And it comes with a fabulous provenance for a Middle Date Cent. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

1821 N-1 R6+ (as a proof) PCGS graded Proof-60 Brown. Light olive and steel brown fading to light chocolate. Traces of faded mint color remain visible on the obverse while about 15% of the reverse retains mellowed mint red. There are a few light handling marks on both sides, most notably some nicks on the cheek and in the field under the chin. The fields are smooth and reflective but the mirrors are not deep which is typical of these early proof strikes. There is obvious doubling on stars 7-13 and fine doubling on most of the letters outside the wreath (also a feature of our early proofs). Noyes photo #31966. Our grade is Proof-58. A very rare early proof large cent, and it comes with a provenance that has been traced back more than a century. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. About 12 to 15 examples to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 1; 2 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 65. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP
