Lot 424
1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS Genuine, P/FR Details, Environmental Damage. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter brown and chocolate toning on the highpoints. The two-tone contrast highlights the date and devices and makes it easier to make out the date and read the legends (which are weak and distorted but nearly compete). The highpoints are smooth while everything else is rough. Looks like this piece may have been corroded and then placed back into circulation for a while. No marks or verdigris. Our grade is net Fair-2. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1793 S-11b R4 Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge PCGS graded F15. Variety with Two Leaves following DOLLAR. Mostly glossy light olive and steel. The surfaces are mostly smooth and the eye appeal is excellent, but a glass reveals extremely fine roughness in protected areas on the lower part of the reverse. No verdigris, just a few small marks. The notable ones are three faint, very old pin scratches in the field behind the head, a small planchet chip high on the cheek, and another at the bottom of the T in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state III, with obvious die clashmarks from the chin down to the bottom of the neck. The date and legends are complete and easily readable, and the edge lettering is bold. 1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge PCGS graded G4. Variety with a Single Leaf following DOLLAR. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and nice for the grade, just worn. The notable marks are two vertical planchet voids in the field behind the head, a smaller void at the rim over the E in LIBERTY, and a collection of tiny voids at TES (all as struck). The bottom of the date is starting to wear into the rim but it remains easily readable. LIBERTY is strong and the legends on the reverse are readable with the exception of the denominator, which is worn away. The Lettered Edge feature is clear. MDS showing die clashmarks on the obverse. The only marks are a few faint hairline scratches on the cheek, but these are very old and blend perfectly into the natural patina. Looks like a cent that was lost in soil for a while and it appears to have never been brushed or "improved" in any way. The date and at least half of the legends are readable, but they have been weakened by the corrosion. Many of the tiny stars are still visible, strongest over UNITED. Very attractive frosty medium chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and lighter brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. No spots, stains, or traces of roughness. The only defects are some trivial contact marks, and the only notable ones among them are a tiny rim bruise or dull rim nick under the right side of the 6 and a tiny pinprick tucked under the right end of the wreath stem. Only 9 examples are known of the die variety and this is the discovery coin. It is plated to illustrate the variety in the Breen encyclopedia and the 1991 Noyes reference. 1797 S-129 R5 F12. Variety with M over E in AMERICA. Sharpness VF25 but there is a dent in the field near the dentils left of the lower curls. E-MDS, Breen state II, without the additional die crack from the lower curls up into the field below the hair ribbon. The date and legends are strong and the Stemless Wreath feature is bold. A very small planchet clip affects the dentils right of Y in LIBERTY and the opposing ones over I in AMERICA (as struck), and it can help identify this cent. Called VF30 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and CC#14 in his 1999 edition of the census, his photo #36199. In the 2005 edition of the Noyes census he lists this cent as VF30 net F15 and CC#17. Comes with a nice provenance, regardless of the grade you assign. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath F12. Sharpness VF30 or slightly better but there are numerous tiny ticks on the obverse, a few small pits in the field before the portrait, and a patch of shallow reddish brown corrosion at ON CEN. Mostly glossy light steel brown and olive with traces of reddish brown in protected areas. Looks better than it might sound. None of these marks is especially distracting and the overall eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. LDS, Breen state V. 1797 S-137 R2 G5. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. The surfaces appear smooth but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint granularity under the mostly glossy patina. No verdigris, and the only marks are some very old hairline scratches hidden in the patina, none notable. This cent was struck twice with a 90-degree rotation between the impressions. One strike was centered on the planchet and the off-center impression was 5-10% off center to K-6 (or K-3 relative to the centered strike). The upper half of the date and most of the bust of the off-center impression are clearly visible near the rim before the portrait, and the opposing D STATE is faintly visible hidden in the opposing dentils over S OF AM. An impressive mint error in spite of the low grade. Removed from an ANACS slab graded VG8 (ANACS label #2779788 included, and it notes the Double Struck error). Estimate Value $300 - UP
