Lot 401
1795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date, Plain Edge PCGS graded AU53. Lustrous chocolate and steel brown with delicate splashes of reddish chocolate and olive on both sides. The fields are slightly reflective and underlying mint luster covers the reverse. The only notable mark is a shallow depression (probably pre-striking) in the unstruck portion of the planchet outside the dentils opposite the neck. Otherwise free of contact marks, only the usual tiny planchet flakes or chips showing on the portrait and center of the reverse where some of the normal planchet imperfections didn’t completely smooth out during the strike. Struck 5-10% off center to K-9. An outstanding example of an early mint error. Our grade is AU50. Plated on page 21 in the second edition of the Cohen book on the "Little Half Sisters." Weight 88.1 grains. Comes with a very nice provenance for a US Half Cent. The attribution and "Mint Error/Off-Center" status are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population for the variety (not error) is 0; 2 finer, 1 in 55, 1 in 63+. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP

1795 C-6a R2 Plain Edge, No Pole PCGS graded AU55. Frosty chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected areas. The toning is a bit uneven on the obverse where the portrait and field to the right are a few shades darker than the remainder of the coin. There is very little if any friction on the highpoints of the devices and the only notable marks are a light rim nick under the bust tip and two tiny rim ticks over TE in UNITED. Struck about 5% off center to K-10 on a planchet cut from a Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. Clear undertype from the TAL Cent is visible in the obverse fields, strongest around the date and below the cap. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any trace of swelling in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY. Our grade is AU50. The attribution (but not off-center error) is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 65, 1 in 66+ for the variety. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP

Lot 403
1795 C-6b R6- No Pole, Plain Edge PCGS graded VF25. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with wisps of lighter sea-green overtones on the reverse. No corrosion, verdigris, or notable marks. The best identifying feature is a curved planchet clip that affects the dentils under 179 and the opposing ones over TES (as struck). EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any swelling in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY. The date is often weakly struck on these thick planchet strikes of the variety, but it is complete and clear on this example. The weight is not shown on the PCGS label, but the planchet is clearly thicker than those found on the normal thin planchet strikes. These thick planchets were cut from spoiled large cents, and occasionally you can see large cent undertype on the half cents (but not on this one). A very nice example of this rare variant. Our grade is F15 which would place it solidly in the middle of the condition census for the variety. The attribution as C-6b (the Thick Planchet version) is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP

1795 C-6b R6- No Pole, Plain Edge PCGS graded VG10. Partly glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attractive, void of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. There are some faint hairlines inside the wreath and a barely visible rim bruise that has been lightly smoothed at CA in AMERICA. The date is not strong but it is easily readable, and the legends are clear except for the usual weakness on HALF CENT. The weight is not shown on the PCGS label, but the planchet is clearly thicker than those seen on the thin planchet (C-6a) variant. Our grade is VG8. The attribution as C-6b (the rare Thick Planchet version of the C-6 die variety) is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $300 - UP

1796 C-2 R4 With Pole PCGS Genuine, VG Details, Damage. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. No marks or significant verdigris, but this piece is covered with uniform moderate roughness consistent with having been lost in soil for a significant length of time. There is very little evidence of wear on the devices but the roughness obscures the finer details. The date and legends are complete and easily readable with the exception of HALF CENT, which is weaker. Our grade is F12 sharpness net AG3. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1800 C-1 R2 VG8. Sharpness near VF30 but dark and covered with uniform moderate roughness. No marks and verdigris, and the toning is a slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, with obvious swelling and die clashmarks over NITE. What make this piece special is that it was struck over a spoiled large cent, and that cent was an off-center reverse brockage error. Obvious undertype from the large cent shows in the center of the obverse where ON and EN from ONE CENT are clearly visible to the unaided eye. On the reverse there is an offset arc of incuse large cent dentils from the rim right of OF down to the 2 in the denominator. A nice mint error that points to a time in our history when labor was cheap and planchet material was scarce. Estimate Value $800 - UP

MDS, Manley state 2.0, with fine die cracks on the reverse. Estimate Value $300 - UP

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VG7. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate blending to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and attractive for the grade, a nick near the rim behind the head being the best identifying mark. This piece was struck twice. One strike was centered on the planchet but the piece failed to eject before being struck a second time. The second strike was rotated 30 degrees CW and slightly off center to K-5. The second strike was against the obverse die on that side leaving obvious "naked-eye" evidence of the rotated strike on the portrait. The reverse was struck against a new blank planchet on the second impression thereby creating an incuse brockage of the reverse on that planchet and causing characteristic swelling or unevenness on this piece. A neat "double error." Estimate Value $200 - UP

1805 C-2 R5 Small 5 with Stems PCGS graded F12. Rather glossy light to medium chocolate brown with hints of lighter reddish brown in protected areas on the obverse. This piece offers nice eye appeal, but the surfaces are not perfect. Sharpness closer to F15 but here are several microscopic spots of very shallow carbon scattered over both sides, mostly on the portrait, and a collection of nicks on the neck. The best identifying marks are a tiny rim nick off the upper edge of the bust and a pinprick under the right foot of the first A in AMERICA. EDS without any hint of swelling in the field over the bust. The date is bold and the legends are clear. Our grade is net VG8. A nice example of this very rare variety in spite of the imperfections, in the lower part of the condition census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 35, 1 in 50. The only notable mark is a faint hairline scratch in the field from just off the chin to the rim before the neck. MDS. 1806 C-3 R6 Small 6 with Stems PCGS Genuine, VF Details, Environmental Damage. A sharply detailed example that is covered with fine to moderate roughness, strongest on the obverse. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a very old scratch along the dentil tips over the second S in STATES. Dark steel and olive brown. The date and legends are complete and clear, although LIBERTY is relatively weak from the roughness. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before the die crack at ICA. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-1, as usual for this variety. A very rare variety that in unknown in high grade; only one is known grading better than VG (the net Fine-15 example we sold as lot 85 in our 1/26/2014 sale of the fabulous Missouri Cabinet Collection). 1811 C-1 R7 (for the die state) Fair-2. Sharpness at least G4 with some details significantly better, but the surfaces are covered with moderate roughness and there are a few dull contact marks on both sides. In spite of the poor surfaces the date is complete and easily readable and most of the legends are clear. Dull dark steel gray. Extremely rare M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, with a strong cud break at stars 1 & 2. About 8 are known with the 2-star cud break, and none is in high grade. The famous Missouri Cabinet Collection, the finest collection of half cents ever assembled, had an AG-3 example of the die state. 1811 Mickley Restrike Rarity-7 PCGS graded Mint State-64 Brown. Frosty uniform light to medium brown. A tiny pin scratch on the bottom of star 2 and a small, shallow contact mark under the right side of the E in CENT are the only signs of contact, and both are wholly insignificant. The best identifying mark is a small spot of very fine carbon over the left side of the F in HALF. Both sides show the usual collection of fine die rust (microscopic lumps on the coin's surface) from the mint dies that had been discarded and became rusted before being rescued for this final use. These restrikes were made sometime prior to 1859 by Joseph Mickley using scrap dies he obtained from the mint or some intermediary. The obverse die is the normal 1811 C-2 die and the reverse is from the 1802/0 C-2 marriage. Both dies were heavily rusted when acquired and were lapped to reduce the roughness prior to striking these "restrikes." These are sometimes called Proof strikes, but the condition of the dies used and the lack of reflectivity in the fields makes such a judgment highly questionable. Regardless, these are extremely rare and are highly coveted additions to any advanced collection of US half cents. Our grade is MS60+. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1833 C-1 R5 (as a proof) PCGS graded PR65 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive light olive and golden tan. The obverse fields show moderate to deep reflectivity while the portrait is frosty giving this piece a subtle cameo appearance. The reverse fields are moderately reflective. The only marks are a few very fine lint impressions in the obverse fields (caused by fibers left behind by a cloth used to wipe the dies) and a tiny chip or struck-through impression at a dentil tip over the L in LIBERTY. Curiously, this tiny mark is present on several examples struck from the early, unclashed proof strikes (for an example see lot 133 in our 1/26/2014 sale of the Missouri Cabinet). EDS, Breen state II late. There is a very fine die crack connecting stars 2-7 but no trace of die clashmarks on either side. A beautiful early proof. Our grade is Proof-64+, close to 65. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2, none finer in Proof Brown. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

Blank Planchet for a Half Cent, Type II, PCGS graded MS61 Brown. Frosty chocolate and olive brown. The only defects are a shallow planchet flake or void on one side and the usual collection of microscopic planchet imperfections that smooth out when the planchet is struck by the dies. The planchet has upset rims and the edge is double flanged (Type II). The diameter exactly matches that of the half cents of 1803-1836 (which have a 23.0 millimeter diameter that is very slightly larger than the later 1849-1857 half cents), but the weight is a bit hefty (92.0 grains versus the 84.0-grain standard). Since the weights tended to vary quite a bit on these, it is reasonable to conclude this planchet was intended for one of those 1803-1836 half cents. A very nice example, and it comes with an equally nice provenance. The "Mint Error" and "Type II" information is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
