1796 S-92 R3 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1795 PCGS graded VF25. Attractive glossy chocolate and darker steel brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth except for a small patch of microscopic roughness in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon. No trace of verdigris and only light contact marks including fine hairline scratches on both sides. The notable marks are two hairline scratches that cross to form a crude "X" in the field before the chin and a tiny pinprick or planchet chip left of the bottom of the denominator. E-MDS, Breen state II. The crack through the feet of TY into the field at the right is light and die clashmarks show on both sides. The date and legends are complete and clear. Graded VF25 net VF20 by Noyes and tied for CC#15, his photo #56556. Our grade is VF20 net F15+. Removed from an ANACS slab graded EF40 (ANACS grading label included, and it shows the attribution). 1796 S-103 R4+ LIHERTY Error PCGS graded VG10. Rather glossy light chocolate brown and steel on the devices with darker olive brown toning in protected areas. The two-tone appearance accents the details and creates excellent eye appeal. No corrosion or verdigris, and the only notable marks are a faint diagonal hairline scratch through the 6 and a small planchet chip on the lower part of the C in CENT (as struck). EDS, Breen state I. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the bottom causing the date to be weaker near the rim, but the LIHERTY feature is bold and the reverse legends are strong. Called VG10 net VG8 in the Noyes census, his photo #29189. Our grade is VG10, same as the PCGS grade. A nice example of this popular "Redbook" type. 1796 S-110 R3 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 PCGS graded VF30. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and very attractive, void of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. Just trivial contact marks, including a tiny pinprick in the field before the upper lip, a faint diagonal hairline scratch through the T in CENT, and a nearly horizontal nick close over the top of that T. The date is bold and the legends are clear. MDS, Breen state IV, with fine die cracks at the date and LIBERTY but without the additional crack through that T down to the forelock. 1796 S-114 R5- Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 PCGS graded XF45, CAC Approved. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and very attractive, flawless except for trivial marks. The best identifying marks are a tiny spot of lighter brown toning in the field midway between the tip of the nose and the dentils and two small planchet chips above the right side of the N in ONE (as struck). EDS, Breen state I before any die cracks or cuds on the obverse. This piece is well struck, which is another big plus since so many of this variety come with significant strike weakness, especially at the top of the reverse. A superior example of this tough variety, and it is a relatively new discovery that first appeared in a November 2011 auction. Our grade is VF30, which would place this piece solidly among the top 6 known. The attribution and Mervis-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. There is light wear on the devices and only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The only notable mark is a diagonal nick in the hair at the forehead. E-MDS, Breen state III, with minor die cracks on both sides but no cud breaks. The spur on the right side of the 9 is sharp. Struck with the reverse misaligned slightly to K-2.5 while the obverse is centered on the planchet. Called VF25 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #36614. Just a few minor contact marks, all consistent with the grade. The best identifying marks are a dull diagonal nick through the top of the L in LIBERTY, an arc of impressed dentils just off the lower end of the hair ribbon, and a planchet flake hidden in the hair near the neck. MDS with the usual die clashmarks on the reverse but no die cracks on the obverse. The date is full and clear, and the legends are complete and easily readable. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. Just a few trivial contact marks, including a small diagonal nick at the right bottom of the second S in STATES. Nicely struck except for some weakness hidden in the drapery over the 0 in the date, apparently the result of a pre-striking depression in the planchet. 1803 S-243 R2 Stemless Wreath PCGS graded XF45. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with reddish chocolate toning in a couple of the protected areas on both sides. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals very fine roughness in the reddish areas, and the roughness is strongest around the lowest curl left of the shoulder. No notable contact marks and the eye appeal is quite nice in spite of the minor roughness. MDS, Breen state III, with a rim cud break from the Y to opposite the end of the nose. 1803 S-247 R3 Small Date & Fraction PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Glossy steel brown and light olive with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. There is a small puff of reddish steel brown toning under LIB and a few more faint ones scattered over the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are a diagonal nick hidden along the hair line near the forehead and a shallow scratch under ME in AMERICA. Neither mark is visible to the unaided eye and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. MDS, Breen state II, with a light die crack through the top of NIT. The "Mumps" break at the throat is obvious. The best identifying marks are a small rim nick over the B in LIBERTY, a barely visible rim bruise over that R, and two parallel nicks just above the lower curls. MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack arcing up through the 1 and lower curls ending at the rim left of the lower end of the hair ribbon. There is no trace of a bulge in the field under the crack. 1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date, Small Fraction PCGS graded AG3. Mostly glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. No corrosion or verdigris, only normal wear and minor contact marks. A rim bruise under the bust tip, another just left of the denominator, and a planchet flake on the rim over the first T in STATES are the only notable marks. LDS, Breen state III. The die crack at the top of the reverse is strong and the section at STA is raised into a retained cud with STA obliterated. The date is strong and the legends on the reverse are clear (except for STA, as mentioned). This cent is well worn, of course, but it offers decent eye appeal, especially for this tough "Redbook" variety that usually comes with significant problems that result in a "Genuine" assessment by PCGS. The obverse grades AG3 but the reverse is significantly better and would grade at least G5. Noyes says G5 sharpness net G4, his photo #25450. Our grade is G4. 1804 S-266b R5 (as a die state) PCGS graded VF20. Mostly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. Looks perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas, although it is mostly hidden under the glossy toning. No verdigris and only a few minor contact marks. The notable ones are a light rim bruise opposite the nose and a thin diagonal nick off the end of the bust. Scarce M-LDS, Breen state III, with a cud break at RTY but without the cud at MERI. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation.
