Augustus. Silver Denarius (3.98 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Lugdunum, 15-13 BC. AVGVSTVS DIVI F, bare head of Augustus right. Reverse: IMP X in exergue, Augustus, bare-headed and togate, seated left on curule chair set on daïs, extending hand toward two soldiers, each carrying parazonium and presenting laurel branches. RIC 165a; Lyon 13; BMC 445-6; RSC 133. Wonderful old cabinet tone. NGC grade Ch XF*; Strike: 5/5, Surface: 5/5. Fine style. Estimate Value $3,000 - 3,500
From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection. Purchased privately from E. Waddell.
The reverse of this denarius is thought to celebrate victories won over the Raeti (a confederation of Alpine tribes of probable Etruscan origin) and their northern Celtic neighbors, the Vindelici, by Augustus' stepsons Drusus and Tiberius in 15 BC. Here, however, Augustus takes all the credit. The Emperor, not his stepsons and skilled commanders, appears seated on a curule chair set up on a daïs while two armed figures approach to present laurel branches in supplication. The figures probably serve as personifications of the Raeti and the Vindelici. Their conquered territories were governed as two distinct provinces until the late first century AD when they were amalgamated as the province of Raetia.

The host of religious implements depicted on the reverse of this denarius advertise the religious authority of Augustus, who took great pains to restore (sometimes going so far as to reinvent) the cults of Rome as a means of maintaining the pax deorum ("peace of the gods") or harmony between mankind and the gods. The simpulum was a type of ladle used to pour libations and frequently served as a symbol of the pontifices, the highest Roman priestly college with fifteen priests; the lituus was a wand used by the augurs, the college of priests charged with interpreting omens, while the tripod and patera are more general sacrificial emblems. Together they represent the emperor's preeminent position as Pontifex Maximus, the supreme priest of Rome.

Augustus. Silver Denarius (3.86 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Emerita(?), ca. 17/6 BC. Bare head of Augustus left. Reverse: AVGVSTVS, capricorn right, holding globe attached to rudder between front hooves, cornucopiae above its back. RIC 130; BN 1354-7; BMC 307-8; RSC 22. Very Rare. A fine artistic left facing portrait of Augustus. Lightly toned. Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $1,000 - 1,300
Although there is a problem of chronology that has not been clearly sorted, Augustus advertised his birth sign as Capricorn. The capricorn was a half terrestrial, half marine being, and played a prominent role in Augustan propaganda, seen on several coin types as well as in other media. Here the capricorn with globe seems to signify Augustus' power over land and sea. The rudder and cornucopiae are terrestrial attributes of the goddess Bona Fortuna, reminding us of Augustus' role in bringing peace and good fortune to the Empire after the devastating civil wars of the 40s and 30s BC.For an enlightening discussion of Augustus' horoscope and it's use in imperial propaganda, see T. Barton, "Augustus and Capricorn: Astrological Polyvalency and Imperial Rhetoric," JRS 85, 1995, pp. 31-51.

Augustus. Æ As (11.08 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Uncertain mint in Northwestern(?) Spain, ca. 27-23 BC. IMP AVG DIVI F, bare head of Augustus left; before, palm branch; behind, winged caduceus. Reverse: Celtiberian shield. ACIP 3302a; RPC 4. Rare. Light green and earthen patina. Choice Very Fine. Estimate Value $500 - 600
This coin belongs to a somewhat mysterious bronze series struck at an uncertain mint probably in northwestern Spain. Based on the obverse titulature and stylistic similarity of issues of Emerita struck by Publius Carisius during his tenure as legatus Augusti pro praetor in Lusitania (25-23 BC) it is thought to have been struck between 27 and 23 BC, but there remains some question as to whether it should be treated as an imperial or a provincial issue. Since no city, people, or dynast is named in addition to Augustus, it has been suggested that it is a military issue connected to the first phase of the Cantabrian War (29-19 BC), which saw Augustus and then Carisius lead Roman forces against the Asturian allies of the Cantabrians in 26-25 BC. The round shield on the reverse was a typical defensive weapon used by Celtiberian peoples like the Cantabrians and Asturians in their conflict with the Romans. As the reverse type on a potentially Roman military issue in Spain, the shield serves both as an emblem of the enemy and perhaps as shorthand for the booty carried off and trophies erected after his defeat.

Estimate Value $4,000 - 5,000
From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection. Ex Nomos 11 (9 October 2015), 164.
This denarius was struck at the beginning of the reign of the young Emperor Gaius - known popularly as Caligula because of the little military boots (caligae) that he wore in the army camps as a boy. The reason for his presence in the camps is depicted on the reverse of the coin: his father, the beloved grand-nephew and adopted son of Tiberius, who spent much of his career leading the legions against the enemies of the Empire, especially in Germania. Germanicus had been the intended heir of Tiberius, but he died suddenly at Antioch in AD 19. Unfortunately, when Germanicus' wife, Agrippina, returned to Rome she became entangled in a bitter feud with Tiberius that resulted in the extermination of the entire family of Germanicus - all except for Caligula. He went on to succeed Tiberius as emperor in AD 37. Germanicus no doubt appears on this issue to take advantage of the popularity that Caligula's dead father still had with the Roman public, thereby subtly distancing himself from the memory of Tiberius, who had become unpopular if not actually hated by many over the course of his reign.

From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection. Purchased privately from CNG.
This fouree denarius was struck in Britannia in imitation of an issue apparently produced to emphasize Claudius' somewhat distant family relationship with Augustus, the great first Roman Emperor. The oak wreath on the reverse is the corona civica traditionally awarded to a Roman citizen who saved another citizen in battle. This wreath was awarded to Augustus in 27 BC for saving the entirety of the Roman state from further civil war. Under Claudius this type first appears at the beginning of his reign, suggesting a possible claim that the emperor had averted a new civil war by his placation of the Praetorian Guard after the assassination of Caligula. Claudius sometimes appears wearing this wreath in his sculptural depictions. The fact that the coin is a fourrée produced in Britannia is also notable since it was under Claudius that the Romans invaded the island in force in AD 43 and established a permanent presence. Roman coin certainly came to Britannia with the invaders, but may have been in short supply at times, which may have encouraged the local production of imitations and contemporary counterfeits.

From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection. Ex Obolos 4 (21 February 2016), 558; Prince Waldeck Collection (Münzhandlung Basel 1, 28 June 1934), 183.
This coin comes from the collection of Prince Friedrich I of Waldeck, the last reigning prince of the German state of Waldeck and Pyrmont. Established as a county of the Holy Roman Empire from about 1200, by 1870 it had become a constituent element of the German Empire of the Hohenzollern Kaisers. The disaster of World War I resulted in widespread uprisings in Germany that forced Kaiser Wilhelm II and the lesser hereditary nobility to abdicate in 1918, and like his peers, Friedrich I gave up his power and his principality was absorbed into the fragile new Weimar Republic. The collection, which focused on Roman and Byzantine coins, was mostly sold off in the early 1930s.

From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection; Ex Lanz 28 (7 May 1984), 576.
This remarkable medallion commemorates the joint triumph celebrated by Commodus together with his father, Marcus Aurelius, on December 23, AD 176, for victories won over the German tribes in the long Marcomannic Wars (AD 166-180). On this occasion, father and son rode together in the triumphal chariot as depicted on the reverse and Commodus was granted tribunician power. On January 1, 177, despite his youth (he was 15 at the time), Commodus became consul for the first time. As the medallion includes both the tribunician and consular titles on the reverse, it must have been struck after the beginning of 177. The obverse portrait of Commodus is notable because it does not depict him wearing the consular robes one might expect from the reverse type and historical context, but instead he wears a long, scaly aegis. This peculiar garment does not connect him to the triumphant imperial dynasties of Rome, but rather to Alexander the Great, a conqueror admired by many emperors. A popular Hellenistic statue type had been the Alexander Aigiochos ("Alexander wearing the aegis") and here we have an updated Roman version - Commodus Aigiochos.
