1816 N-1 R4+ PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of frosty lighter steel brown and tan in protected areas. There is just a touch of friction on the highpoints and a few trivial contact marks scattered over both sides. The best identifying mark is a spot of darker olive brown toning between star 6 and the tip of the coronet. M-LDS with rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 11 and a fine die crack through the top of NITED. The chin is a bit sunken, as usual for this variety. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#4, his photo #27325. Our grade is AU50. This attractive cent comes with a great provenance. 1816 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown with more than two-thirds of the mint color remaining visible on both sides. A beautiful cent with only a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a small spot of darker toning in the field close before the eye and another tucked neatly between the two left points of star 10. E-MDS with the usual rim cud from star 8 to star 11 but without a rim cud between stars 11 & 12. Most likely from the Randall Hoard of mint state cents that came to light shortly after the end of the US Civil War, but this is an especially nice one. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. 1816 N-3 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty light to medium brown with subtle sea-green and light bluish steel overtones in the fields and protected areas. Mint luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. Generous traces of faded mint color remain visible on the reverse and this piece offers excellent eye appeal. Both dies are worn thanks to having been used in earlier marriages (the obverse on N-1 and the reverse on N-9). Struck slightly off center to K-4, which is typical for the variety, causing an uneven strike, weaker on the lower right and stronger at the upper left on the obverse. The rim cuds from star 8 nearly to star 11 are obvious. Graded MS60 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS60. Comes with a nice provenance. 1816 N-4 R2 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Choice lustrous light olive and bluish steel with traces of mellowed mint red showing in protected areas on both sides. A nearly flawless cent that offers outstanding eye appeal. The best identifying marks are an incipient planchet clip that weakens a few dentils left of star 1 and the opposing dentils over the first T in STATES (as struck), an elongated nick-like planchet void along the dentil tips right of star 11, and a small puff of slightly darker toning at the right top of the M in AMERICA. M-LDS. At least half of the dentils are gone, many of the stars are drawn to the rim, and the small dash between the C & A in AMERICA is faint but still visible. Both sides of this cent are plated in the Newcomb reference on the cents of 1816-1857 (Plate I, photos 4 & D). Graded MS63 and tied for CC#1 honors with one other piece in the Bland census. Noyes says MS61 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21154. Our grade is MS63. Comes with an impressive provenance, as you would expect. 1816 N-5 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Choice light bluish steel brown with nearly a third of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. A beautiful cent that offers great luster and eye appeal. Nearly flawless but a strong glass reveals a faint diagonal hairline scratch through star 3 and a couple small planchet voids on the chin and jawline, as struck. Nicely struck E-MDS. The repunching under the N in CENT is clear and the die lines on the neck are sharp. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS61 and tied for CC#4, his photo #20720. Choice frosty original mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the devices, more than half the original color remaining on the obverse and 15% on the reverse. Flawless except for a few inconsequential specks of darker toning scattered about both sides. A small spot of darker steel toning midway between stars 6 & 7 is the only spot visible without a strong glass, and the only contact mark is an equally insignificant tick on the right corner of the eye. MDS with fine radial die flowlines in the fields, strongest outside the wreath. Called MS65 and finest known by 5 points in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and finest known, his photo #20601. Tiny specks of lighter brown and tan toning are sprinkled over the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only mark, and it is trivial, is a tiny diagonal tick on the truncation over the right side of the 8. LDS with a bisecting die crack across the reverse from the rim at F-A to the rim at NI in UNITED. Graded MS63 and tied for CC#1 honors with one other piece in the Noyes census, his photo #20887. 1817 N-4 R3+ PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Beautiful lustrous golden tan and light brown with slightly darker chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply struck and nearly flawless. The only marks are a tiny planchet flake near the dentils over star 5 (as struck), a collection of microscopic low spots near the hair under star 8 (also as struck), and a small swipe of darker toning over EN in CENT. E-MDS. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing that left microscopic die lines down to right in the obverse fields. The die crack through the base of the date reaches the dentil tips left of star 1 and extends through stars 13 & 12 into the field halfway to star 11. Graded MS63 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #27479. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1 in his census. Our grade is MS63 as well. This is a beautiful, unsurpassed example of a tough die variety. Previously removed from a PCGS slab graded MS64RB (PCGS label # 1595.64/7422174). A beautiful, satiny cent that offers outstanding eye appeal. Just a few minor contact marks, including a couple light nicks on the jawline, one on the bust tip, and another over the 7 in the date. E-MDS. The repunching on the left base of the N in ONE is clear and the fields show fine radial die flowlines on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal is excellent, very close to choice. The only marks are a speck of dark toning right of star 3, another left of star 6, and a third between the N & T in CENT. Kept from choice by a tiny, barely visible scuff on the curl before the ear. MDS. The fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines and the dentils are starting to weaken, although they remain complete around both sides. Struck very slightly off center to K-6. Virtually flawless offering mint state eye appeal in spite of a light touch of friction on the highest points. The best identifying mark is a small spot of darker toning near the hair under star 7. M-LDS. The "Mouse" break resting on the top of the head under star 8 is strong. There are four die cracks elsewhere on the obverse, the strongest of these arcing down from the tip of the nose toward star 2, but no cud breaks. Called AU55 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. 1817 N-14 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints with about 75% of the coin showing mint color. The only notable marks are a small spot of darker toning over the inner part of the hair bun and a speck of carbon over the left side of the O in ONE. MDS, the usual Randall Hoard die state for the variety. A common variety in mint state as a result of the hoard but quite rare with this much original mint red showing. Smooth and essentially flawless offering outstanding eye appeal. Just a touch of friction on the highest points from mint state. Finding identifiable marks presents a challenge; a line of four microscopic ticks between star 5 and the brow will have to suffice, but you will need a glass to see them. 1818 N-2 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light to medium brown with peeps of faded mint red showing in some of the protected areas on both sides. There are small splashes of darker reddish olive brown toning between stars 4 & 5 and at stars 9-11, plus a faint puff of slightly darker reddish brown toning at the T in CENT. A strong glass reveals just the barest hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. E-MDS with a die crack through the top of UNITED and the adjacent ST plus a radial crack from the top of the T in UNITED to the dentil above, but without a radial crack to the dentils from the crack just left of the first S in STATES. Called MS60 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 and tied for CC#1, his photo #21512. Ted Naftzger graded it MS65, perhaps reflecting the "5-point bump" that comes with ownership. 1818 N-4 R4+ PCGS graded AU55. Choice glossy olive and chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are very attractive, virtually flawless, and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The only defects, and they are trivial, are a thin nick on the base of the second 1 in the date, a couple tiny horizontal contact marks through the O in ONE, and a faint hairline scratch close under the line below CENT. LDS. A strong radial die crack extends from the rim through star 3 into the field towards the lips, and the obverse shows extensive swelling and die flaking. The O in ONE is very weakly struck, as always in the late state due to the heavy swelling on the obverse. The superior condition of this cent allows one a rare opportunity to see the extensive obverse die failures associated with the late die state. A breathtaking example of this rare and very popular die variety, and a highlight of this remarkable collection. The notable marks are two very dull nicks in the field below stars 6 & 7 and a few spots of darker toning on the reverse, the largest of these at the D in UNITED. LDS, the usual die state for pieces from the Randall Hoard. The repunching over the top of the R in AMERICA is dull and barely visible. Our grade is MS63. 1819 N-10 R4 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous olive and chocolate brown with traces of very faded mint color showing through on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and it offers superb eye appeal. The only mark is a dull, very light nick high on the neck under the ear lobe. M-LDS. Die polishing has severely weakened the base of the C in CENT but the strike is sharp and the fine details in the hair over the eye are clear. A great cent. 1820/19 N-1 R1 Large Overdate 20 over 19 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are satiny and this cent is choice except for a few small marks. The only notable marks are a small but eye-catching dig between stars 10 & 11, a tiny tick in the field under star 8, and a small spot of darker toning near the dentils right of the F in OF. MDS. Repunching is clearly visible on the 8 and the 2 over 1 overdate is bold, but the 9 under the 0 is no longer visible. Noyes photo #34117. Our grade is MS60. 1820/19 N-3 Small Overdate 20 over 19 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful lustrous light olive brown and steel with mellowed mint color covering at least 15% of both sides. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. Nearly flawless;. The best identifying mark is a small, light diagonal nick close under the right corner of the eye. E-MDS. 1820 N-5 R3 Small Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous bluish steel brown and chocolate with peeps of faded mint color showing in protected areas of the reverse. A faint pin scratch in the field off the tip of the chin and a tiny planchet flake in the field under the hair bun (as struck), plus a swipe of lighter golden tan toning at the T in CENT into the wreath at right are the best identifying marks. The surfaces are satiny and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. Sharply struck EDS with an inner circle at the dentil tips from star 13 to under the 20 in the date. Called MS63 choice and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #20632. Bland says MS60+ and CC#1 as well. This piece is the finest of only 3 examples known in mint state, and one of those is impounded in the ANS museum. Our grade is MS63. Comes with a nice provenance. 1820 N-6 R4 Small Date PCGS graded MS62 Brown. A beautiful frosty cent but there is a long, thin nick or hairline scratch in the field under star 6, and this mark catches the eye. Otherwise this cent is choice. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with lots of lustrous light steel brown remaining on both sides, including faint hints of very faded underlying mint color on the reverse. A small spot of reddish chocolate toning between the curl over the 2 and the truncation can help identify this cent. MDS. The tiny center dot on the reverse is still visible. Great luster and eye appeal, especially for a variety that almost never comes in high grade. Just try to find a better one. Peeps of faded mint red can be found in protected areas on the reverse. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are three tiny ticks right of the eye, a speck of darker toning (not carbon) in the field close under the chin, and another spot of darker toning under the left foot of the N in UNITED. M-LDS. The small dash between the F in OF and the adjacent A is weak but still visible and the center dot on the reverse is gone. 1820 N-9 R3 Large Date PCGS graded MS64+ Brown. Lustrous chocolate and lighter steel brown with peeps of mint color remaining on the obverse while 20% of the reverse retains mint red. A splash of slightly darker chocolate toning is very delicately blended into the toning between stars 3 & 4. The only defects are a speck of darker toning over the N in ONE, another right of the T in CENT, and a third under the R in AMERICA. Sharply struck EDS with smooth fields and sharp repunching under the foot of the T in CENT. Evidence of repunching also shows at the lower left of the 0 in the date. A sharp cent that offers excellent eye appeal. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and CC#2, his photo #21209. Both census lists indicate there are only two mint state examples known for this variety with the next best grading only AU50 or EF45 depending on the list used. Our grade is MS63. 1820 N-12 R3 Large Date PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light bluish steel brown with 90% of the bright mint red remaining on the obverse and a third of the reverse showing mellowed mint color. A very impressive cent that would rate a gem grade if not for a shallow contact mark on the rim above star 6 and a collection of shallow ticks at TA in STATES. M-LDS. The small lump over the upper right point of star 4 is dull and very faint. Graded MS65 and finest known in the Bland census. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. Both sides of this cent are plated in the Newcomb reference on the cents of 1816-1857 (Plate III, photos 12 & L). Comes with a great provenance, which you would expect for such a remarkable cent.
