Lot 236
1794 S-17a R5- Head and Edge of 1793 F12. Sharpness EF40 with scattered pits, mostly on the top of the obverse, and traces of hard verdigris on both sides. Del Bland calls these "severe planchet defects," and some of the flaws appear to be exactly that, but certainly not all. In addition there are a few light scratches at the top of the date, some more along the upper edge of the pole, and a couple stronger ones at the right top of the Y in LIBERTY. Fortunately most of the planchet is reasonably smooth and the toning is a very attractive slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The date and legends are complete and strong. LDS, Breen state IV, with an obvious die crack that bisects the obverse. This crack is visible all the way across the obverse including the highest points of the hair. This is the only example known to us that shows the complete crack, and it is the Breen plate coin for the die state in his encyclopedia on early date large cents. Graded EF45 with "severe planchet flaws" by Del Bland and listed as CC#2 behind the ANS example in the Bland/Breen census. Noyes says EF40 net VG10, his photo #31639. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP

1794 S-17a R5- Head and Edge of 1793 VG7. Sharpness near F12 but myriad light scratches cover much of both sides and there is a collection of contact marks on the upper part of the neck. Minor roughness covers all but the highpoints of the devices, which are smooth, and there are traces of fine verdigris in a few places. Very shallow dents near the rim behind the portrait have caused a minor bulge at UNITED. The surfaces display a decent amount of gloss in spite of the minor roughness. Recolored an attractive medium chocolate brown with a hint of reddish chocolate toning in the protected areas. Very late die state, the latest seen and clearly later than the previous example. Although wear has removed most of the bisecting obverse crack, the crack is much stronger and wider at the end of the pole. This die state is clearly later than Breen's state IV. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for much of ONE CENT thanks to the swelling in that area. A great piece for the die state specialist. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1794 S-17b (NC-4) R8 Head of 1793 with Edge of 1794 Fair-2. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are quite smooth, much nicer than you expect for a low-grade large cent. The only notable marks are a few thin horizontal planchet fissures left of the date (as struck) and a dull nick under the top of the 7. The bottom of the date is worn into the rim but the upper two-thirds of the date is easily readable. About a third of the reverse devices remain visible. And best of all the edge lettering is complete and strong, including the upturned leaf following DOLLAR. Only 2 examples of this variety are known, the other one being a corroded net AG3+ (sold in our auction of the Dan Holmes Collection, 9/6/2009:29, realizing $26,450). Clearly this is the better of the two pieces based on eye appeal. Graded Fair-2 and CC#2 behind the AG3 in the Bland census. Noyes says Fair-2 and CC#2 as well, his photo #34941. A great opportunity for the serious specialist. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1794 S-18a R6 Head and Edge of 1793 Fair-2. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown toning in the protected areas. The surfaces are smooth except for a couple dozen tiny pits scattered over both sides, strongest at the top of the obverse. No verdigris, and the only contact mark is a small, light rim bruise under the 1 in the date. The details on the obverse are stronger than those on the reverse, which is typical for the variety. The date is weak, especially the 4, but it is readable. The edge lettering is complete and easily readable, including the downturned leaf following DOLLAR. Graded Fair-2 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #36429. Far from perfect, but this was the best example available to Jack Wadlington when he assembled his outstanding collection of early date large cents. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 VG10. Sharpness F15 but there is fine porosity scattered across the top of the obverse and microscopic porosity scattered over the reverse. No verdigris, and the notable contact marks are a rim bruise at the D in UNITED and a lighter one over TE in STATES. Glossy chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the devices. Possibly recolored but the toning is attractive and the eye appeal is decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces. MDS, Breen state III. The dies have been lapped and the right end of the wreath ribbon is fragmented, but there is no bulge in the field under the cap. The date and legends are complete and clear. The reverse of this cent is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference "The Varieties of the United States Cents of the Year 1794" to illustrate the Hays reverse 3-4. In addition "H-52" is written in white paint two times on the edge to document the Hays provenance and Maris-52 die variety. A nice cent that comes with an important provenance. 1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 VG8+. Attractive glossy medium chocolate and olive brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal for the grade. The only notable marks are a small collection of dull pinpricks on the bust, a dull rim nick at the A in STATES, and a rim bruise at ED in UNITED. MDS, Breen state III late. The reverse die has been lapped causing the wreath ribbon right of the fraction to be incomplete, and there is a faint hint of swelling beginning to show under the cap. The date and legends are complete and easily readable, but portions are not strong. A very nice lower-grade example of the popular 1794 Head of 1793 type. Graded VG8 by Del Bland. Comes with a provenance that contains several prominent collectors of large cents. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is a dull rim nick or small rim dent at R in AMERICA. MDS, Breen state I, with a bulge in the field under the cap but without the second bulge down from the left edge of the cap. The date and legends are complete and easily readable but portions are weak, especially the bottom edge of the date. The edge lettering is strong and the downturned leaf following DOLLAR is bold. 1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 G6+. Rather glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint granularity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few faint hairlines hidden in the toning, a very light rim bruise under the lowest curl, and a tiny rim nick over the second A in AMERICA. The bottom of the date is weak but the remainder is easily readable. The legends on the reverse are complete although some elements on the right side are weak. The legend outside the wreath on this die was lightly punched into the die, and it is relatively weak even in high grade. The edge lettering is complete and strong. M-LDS, Breen state II early. The bulge in the field under the center of the cap is clear and the bulge under the left edge of the cap is just starting to appear. A nice lower grade example of the variety, close to VG7. No noticeable verdigris or contact marks. Both sides were very lightly burnished and are nicely retoned a mostly glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter brown and chocolate toning on the obverse highpoints. The date is bold and the legends are clear except for the fraction, which is mostly effaced by roughness. The edge lettering is strong. LDS, Breen state II, with a subtle diagonal bulge across the obverse from the rim left of the cap to the rim off the end of the chin. Graded F15 net VG7 in the Noyes census, his photo #39319. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a pair of fine radial scratches from the end of the lowest curl to the dentils and a bit of shallow planchet slag between the I & C in AMERICA. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with slightly darker reddish chocolate in protected areas on the right side of the reverse. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack from the B in LIBERTY to the upper edge of the cap. The repunching under the base of that L is still visible. Sharply struck and attractive in spite of the fine roughness on the reverse. Graded EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#20 in the Noyes census, his photo #29078. This cent is the plate coin for the variety in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on the cents of 1794. The "H" and "D" in HUNDRED are marked in yellow ink to identify this cent as part of the Homer K. 1794 S-22 R1 Fair-2. Rather glossy medium chocolate brown with darker olive brown and steel in protected areas. The highpoints are smooth but the fields and protected areas are covered with fine roughness. No verdigris or significant marks. The bottom of the date is worn smooth but the upper half remains visible. A wholly pedestrian cent except for one thing: the reverse is bisected by a shelf that meanders from rim to rim giving the appearance of a retained cud or massive die break. In my opinion this is not a die break or cud, and the lack of a significant "Mound" right of the fraction suggests it is not from the latest state of the reverse die. Instead I suspect the shelf is a result of a planchet delamination where metal was peeled away from the right side of the reverse after striking. Careful inspection is recommended. 1794 S-24 R1 AG3. Dark steel brown and chocolate with a few splashes of darker olive brown in protected areas. The surfaces are covered with fine to moderate roughness that weakens the date and parts of the legends, but the date remains readable. This cent is plated on page 118 in the Breen encyclopedia to show a possible terminal die state for the variety. The swelling in the center of the reverse is severe and there is an obvious cud-like area at the bottom of the reverse that sure has the look of a cud. But your cataloger believes this "cud" is a result of a planchet flaw. The rest of the reverse is covered with parallel striations consistent with a planchet delamination. That, combined with the low grade and corrosion, make die state certainty an elusive goal. Close inspection is recommended. Estimate Value $200 - UP

1794 S-32 R2 VF25. Very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are four light scratches in the field before the mouth. E-MDS, Breen state II. There is a strong radial die crack from the dentils through the first S in STATES into the wreath below and two strong sets of die clashmarks on the reverse. The strike is weaker strike on the right edge of both sides, which is normal for this die state thanks to axially misaligned dies (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). The cud break over LI that is associated with Breen state III has not formed, but the spaces between three dentils over the right side of the L are clearly risen although there is no die crack in that area. Very odd; the die must have been sinking at that spot. A nice cent in an interesting die state. Removed from an ANACS slab graded VF30 (ANACS label ZD8191 included). Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

There are a few shallow pits in the field before the face and another near the rim before the neck. Otherwise the planchet is smooth. No verdigris and the only notable contact mark is a rim bruise at UN in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state IV. The die crack through the first S in STATES is quite strong and it extends through the wreath to where ON in ONE is bulged. The date and legends are complete and easily readable except for ONE CENT, which is nearly all gone thanks to the severe swelling inside the wreath. The legend outside the wreath is bold. M-LDS, Breen state V. All 6 of the "Wheelspoke" breaks on the reverse are present but the crack from the cud over LI to the cap has not formed. Graded F12 net G6 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #25022. Bland says net G6 and tied for CC#11. Slightly sharper, especially on the obverse, but the reverse is minutely rough and there are nearly a dozen shallow pits on that side, some of which contain traces of greenish verdigris. The only notable contact marks are a dozen mostly horizontal scratches through the date, but the date is still complete and easily readable. Cleaned and retoning a slightly glossy light reddish brown and chocolate blending to darker steel and olive brown in protected areas. M-LDS, Breen state III. The cud break over LI is clear and a die crack extends from the left end of the cud through the left top of the L and top of the cap to the dentils left of the cap. Far from perfect but still an acceptable example of this tough die variety, and it may offer better eye appeal if properly retoned. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

No verdigris and the only notable contact mark is a dull nick or planchet chip under the right foot of the R in LIBERTY. Both sides show extremely faint hairlines that are visible only under strong magnification, strongest in the field before the portrait. 1794 S-35 R5 F15+. Sharpness VF25 or slightly better but there are a couple dull scratches in the field before the portrait, and they are visible to the unaided eye. Glossy medium chocolate brown. The reverse is not as glossy as the obverse thanks to extremely faint granularity in the fields and protected areas on that side. No verdigris, and the only other contact marks are a half dozen very fine scratches on the reverse, mostly at the top of the wreath, and a light rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with several prominent die cracks on the obverse and the reverse rotated 30 degrees clockwise. In spite of the flaws this cent offers excellent eye appeal, and it comes with a very impressive history. This is the discovery coin for the die variety, that being accomplished by Edouard Frossard while he was cataloging the collection of George Merritt in 1878. Both sides are plated in the 1879 Frossard Monograph, and the obverse is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on the cents of 1794 and in the 1979 Tom Morley reference on grading 1794 cents by die variety (this cent represents the VF20 grade). When William Hays owned the coin he marked the edge two times in white paint with "H53" to identify this cent as the Maris-53 die variety, but some of that marking has flaked away over the decades. Graded VF30 net F15 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #30767. Bland says VF30 net VF20 and CC#7. 1794 S-37 R6+ F15. Mostly glossy medium chocolate brown and olive with the details of a solid VF20+ grade. The cent is attractive, especially for this very rare variety, but the surfaces are not perfectly smooth. Microscopic roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, and there are some faint hairlines hidden in the toning. There is no verdigris and the only significant mark is a rim bruise at the top of the cap. EDS, Breen state I, from the perfect state of the obverse die. The date and legends are complete and strong. Graded VF20 net F15 and tied for CC#3 honors in the Bland/Breen condition census. Noyes says VF20 net VG10 and tied for CC#4, his photo #20435. This very important cent comes with a great provenance, the second oldest pedigree after the discovery coin that resides in the permanent collection of the American Numismatic Society in New York. And it also comes with a wonderful story. Dan Holmes owned this cent from 1989 to 2005, and it was a highlight of his famous collection (sold in our 9/6/2009 auction). But in 2005 Dan was offered the comparable S-37 that had once been in the Tom Morley collection. Although Dan preferred his old example (the cent offered here), he wanted a nice 1794 with the Tom Morley collection provenance. He decided to buy the Morley coin to get the pedigree, even though the granular two-tone Morley coin was slightly inferior in his opinion (an opinion shared by your cataloger who was present when Dan made his decision). As Dan Holmes often said, these cents are worth only a penny. It's the story that goes with them that makes them valuable. And now Dan has become part of the story attached to this cent.
