A relatively modest cent that comes from a great collection. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $100 - UP

1803 S-247 R3 "Mumps" Obverse PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Environmental Damage. Dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning on the obverse highpoints. Very fine roughness covers the planchet and the surfaces are close to matte. Perhaps a proper brushing could bring some more life back to this cent. No marks or verdigris. Extremely rare terminal die state, Breen state III late. The die crack that arcs through the top of the U in UNITED is strong and there are tiny rim cud breaks at either end of this crack. Another great die state in this superb collection. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net F12. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $500 - UP

1803 S-248 R4 PCGS graded XF45, CAC Approved. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel with traces of lighter brown toning in protected areas on both sides. A very nice cent, smooth and attractive with light wear and no notable defects. A dull nick parallel with and close below the lower end of the hair ribbon can help identify this cent. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. The always-present "Mumps" break at the throat is clear. Graded VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #60574. Our grade is VF35. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 1 finer in 55 at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1803 S-249 R2 Corrected Denominator 100/000 PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty tan and light steel brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Ample traces of golden tan faded down from mint color show on both sides and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. A few puffs of darker steel toning near the dentils left of the hair ribbons and a tiny nick at the dentils left of the first A in AMERICA can help identify this cent. Sharply struck EDS, Breen states I & II, with a very subtle bulge in the field off the bust tip and a clearly defined rim cud at ED in UNITED but no cracks on the obverse. Since this bulge appears in the earlier S-248 marriage, Breen's states I & II are the same state. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. The Corrected Denominator (100 over 000) feature is bold. A very nice example of this "Redbook" variety. Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #61009. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 2 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP

No roughness or verdigris, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. A light diagonal nick midway between the inner curl and the lower end of the hair ribbon is the best identifying mark. Extremely rare terminal die state (TDS) with a huge cud break connecting the bust to the rim in addition to the earlier cud at RIC. Both cuds are bold. Certainly one of the finest known of the TDS, and this is the plate coin for the state in the Breen encyclopedia. Our grade is F12. And it comes with a nice provenance. 1803 S-253 R2 PCGS Genuine, Unc Details, Cleaning. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with darker bluish steel and olive toning covering much of the reverse. Perhaps very lightly cleaned but the eye appeal is excellent. The best identifying marks are a few microscopic ticks on the cheek, a small spot of darker toning at the upper end of the hair ribbon, and a collection of barely visible ticks at D-ST. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack arcing through STAT, and the area between this crack and the rim is sunken, deepest at STA. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#4 his photo #23342. Our grade is AU55. This is the plate coin, both obverse and reverse, for the die variety in Penny Whimsy and the Breen encyclopedia on the cents of 1793-1814. A great cent that comes with a great provenance. 1803 S-254 R1 PCGS graded VF35. Glossy medium olive brown and chocolate. Smooth and quite attractive showing light even wear and minor contact marks. A pinprick nick hidden in the curl on the neck is the best identifying mark. MDS, Breen state III late, with a strong die crack through the bust tip to the dentils at both ends. This cent displays a spectacular full obverse brockage, the incuse side rotated about 55-60 degrees clockwise relative to the normal side. Obviously this cent was struck with the obverse die on one side and against the obverse of a previously struck cent that had rotated but failed to eject from the coining chamber. One of the finest examples of this type of error we have seen. Noyes photo #36823. This cent is mentioned in the Remarks section for the S-254 variety in the Breen encyclopedia. Our grade is VF30. The attribution, Full Rev Brockage, and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1803 S-263 R3 PCGS graded AU58. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with traces of lustrous tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. A virtually flawless beauty with just a touch of friction on the highpoints. The best identifying marks are two tiny specks of dirt inside the 0 in the date, a tiny rim nick over the right edge of the E in AMERICA, and a microscopic planchet chip under the first 0 in the denominator (as struck). This cent offers solid mint state eye appeal. MDS, Breen state III. The die crack up to the right from the bust tip is clear and the crack through the fraction is faint, but there is no crack through the base of the date. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#2 of the confirmed examples in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors, his photo #21084. Our grade is AU50+ Choice, very close to AU55 (AU55 is the grade assigned by Noyes in his 1991 reference on the cents of 1793-1814). Comes with a great provenance. 1803 NC-1 R5+ PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Environmental Damage. Dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces are dull thanks to uniform extremely fine granularity. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a faint hairline scratch from the cheek down to the neck where it fades away and a dull vertical nick on the jaw. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through the top of NITE to the rim over the adjacent D. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net F12. Perhaps a proper brushing would bring some life back to the surfaces and improve the eye appeal (and net grade). This is a relatively new discovery and it has not been evaluated by Noyes or Bland. The finest example outside the ANS collection is a burnished piece graded VF30 net F15 in the Noyes census and VF30 net VF20 by Bland. In fact all the top pieces except for the ANS example have significant surface problems, so waiting for a really nice one may be an exercise in futility. 1804 "Restrike" PCGS graded MS66 Red & Brown. Mint red fading to light reddish steel brown with about 25% of the very faded red remaining. No spots, stains, or contact marks. A flawless gem. LDS with extensive die rust evident on both sides in spite of weakness in the central details on both sides due to excessive die lapping to remove the rust. These "cents" were struck outside the US Mint in the late 1850's or early 1860's by Joseph J. Mickley, who obtained the dies as scrap metal. The obverse is from the 1803 S-261 variety with the date altered to 1804, and the reverse is from the 1820 N-12 die variety. Both dies were heavily lapped in an attempt to minimize the rust that had formed since they were discarded. These private "Restrikes" have been popular with collectors since they first appeared for sale in the mid-1860's and are listed in the "Redbook." Our grade is MS65 Gem. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
