Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 155
1797 S-126 R3 Reverse of 1797 PCGS graded XF45, CAC Approved. Very attractive frosty steel brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. No corrosion or verdigris and the only notable marks are tiny pre-striking planchet chips that didn't completely disappear when the coin was struck. These microscopic chips are located mostly on the neck, in the field behind the portrait, and inside the wreath. A pair of very tiny pinpricks just left of the O in OF can help identify this cent. M-LDS, Breen state V. The die crack from the rim to the throat is strong and lumpy, and it extends through the portrait stopping just short of the curl under the hair ribbon. Additional lighter die cracks show in the obverse fields. Graded VF30 net VF25 and tied for CC#16 in the Noyes census. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF30+. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 3; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety, 2 in 55, 2 in 58. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1797 S-131 R2+ Stemless Wreath PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Glossy chocolate brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas, especially on the obverse. Traces of reddish brown toning show around LI and RTY in LIBERTY. The surfaces are smooth but there are two small patches of shallow carbon or dark crud at the top of the hair ribbon. Otherwise only minor contact marks, including a tiny scratch that connects the bases of the N in ONE. Nicely struck M-LDS Breen state IV, showing two dull vertical die cracks in the field before the portrait and a tiny die chip that hangs down from the nose. The date and legends are all bold. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF35+. A nice example of the popular Stemless Wreath type. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. 1797 S-138 R1 PCGS graded AU50. Double Struck. Frosty dark olive and grayish steel. The surfaces are slightly dull thanks to extremely faint uniform granularity. No verdigris, and the only marks are some microscopic hairline scratches across the date, and all of them blend perfectly into the natural toning. LDS, Breen state VIII, with all the die cracks mentioned by Breen and obvious swelling at ES-OF-AM. This cent was struck two times with a short of 1-2 dentils between impressions with a pivot point near the top of the obverse. The doubling is clearest on the lower part of the obverse, especially on the date, and on upper part of the reverse, but evidence of the double strike is visible most everywhere. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF35. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 3 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 58, 1 in 58+, 1 in 64. 1797 S-141 R4 PCGS graded XF40. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. No roughness or verdigris, only light contact marks. A diagonal nick on the throat and a small pinprick over the left top of the N in CENT can help identify this cent. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a dull vertical die crack from the dentils up through the left ribbon end and stem into the wreath. The crack and resulting die failure in that area caused weakness on the denominator and U with similar weakness at the opposing LIBE in LIBERTY. Otherwise the strike is nice. Our grade is VF30 sharpness net VF25. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 4 finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

The surfaces are satiny and the only notable marks are a small planchet flake on the upright of the L in LIBERTY (as struck) and a dull nick on the cheek midway between the lips and ear lobe. MDS, Breen state III early, with microscopic lumps from die rust scattered over both sides and a light die crack through the tops of NITED to the dentils right of that D. MDS, Breen state IV. There are three vertical die cracks in the field behind the portrait but no cud breaks on the reverse. The area at ED-STA is weakly struck due to the opposing vertical cracks on the obverse but everything else is nicely impressed. Called EF45 and tied for CC#3 honors in the Bland/Breen census. MDS, Breen state III, showing sharp die clashmarks between the bust and dentils. Both sides show tiny low spots mixed with die rust, mostly in the central areas. Low spots and die clogs seem to be quite common on this variety and the rarity of nice examples is badly understated in this cataloger's opinion. 1798 S-163 R4- Style I Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded F15. Dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are a bit dull but to describe it as granular would do this cent a disservice. Graded AG3 and tied for CC#3 overall in the Bland census. Noyes says AG3 and tied for CC#5, his photo #26627. Our grade is AG3+. An extremely important cent for the collector of great die states. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 6 at PCGS for the variety . Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1801 S-221 R2 Corrected Denominator 100/000 PCGS graded AU55. Glossy olive brown and steel with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Smooth and sharp with only trivial marks. A small planchet chip in the field over the hair ribbon and a half dozen microscopic pinpricks under the L in LIBERTY are good identifying marks for this cent. E-MDS, Breen state II, showing fine die clashmarks on both sides but no crumbling in the dentils at F-A on the reverse. The Corrected Fraction feature is strong. A very nice example of this popular "Redbook" variety, and it comes with a great provenance. Noyes graded AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#5, his photo #27661. Bland says AU50 and CC#4. Our grade is EF45. The attribution, 100/000 feature, and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 3; 1 finer in 58 at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1802 S-235 R3 PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Rim Damage. Dark steel and olive brown. The surfaces are matte thanks to uniform extremely fine granularity but there is no verdigris. A proper brushing may bring some life to the surfaces. The only marks are a series of 8 sharp rim nicks or short scratches at the rim from the 18 clockwise to left of the hair ribbon. These marks are old and only the one left of the hair ribbon catches your eye. MDS, Breen state V early, with an unlisted intermediate cud break connecting TY in LIBERTY to the rim above. Normally this cud covers all of the top of the T, but the cud on this example ends near the middle of the top of the T. A new intermediate die state that was unknown to Breen, unique to the best of our knowledge. A very important piece for a die state specialist. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net F15. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

1802 NC-1 R5+ PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with frosty light brown and tan toning in protected areas, especially on the reverse where there is much original mint luster remaining. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The obverse fields are slightly reflective and covered with fine vertical die polishing lines from a fresh die lapping. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a small planchet void in the field left of the lower end of the hair ribbon (as struck), a trail of microscopic abrasions in the field up from the bust tip (and these show only if you get the light at the right angle), and a light hairline scratch in the field left of the first S in STATES. LDS, Breen state IV. The bisecting obverse die crack is strong, extending from the rim over the B in LIBERTY down through the B and Ms Liberty to the rim under the bust. A great die state. Called EF45 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 net EF45 and CC#1 as well, his photo #21940. Our grade is EF45. The next best is a VF30 that is followed by a F15, so the census drops off quickly following this beautiful cent. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Noyes and Breen references on early date cents. The attribution and Holmes-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
