1816 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous light olive and steel with at least 10% of the mint color remaining on both sides. A beautiful, satiny cent. No spots or stains, only trivial contact marks. A light horizontal nick over the second 1 in the date is the best identifying mark. MDS with a rim cud break from star 8 to star 11 plus a smaller rim cud between stars 11 & 12. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees clockwise relative to the usual head-to-foot orientation. A very nice cent, most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents that came to light shortly after the end of the US Civil War. Our grade is MS62+, close to MS63. 1817 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and olive with a couple hints of very faded mint color on the obverse. No spots or stains; nearly flawless. The only marks, and they are barely visible with a strong glass, are a faint diagonal hairline before the nose, a tiny rim nick at star 5, and another small rim nick over the left top of the second T in STATES. LDS. The fields are covered with fine radial flowlines, most of the dentils are weak or missing, and there is an obvious lump on the left side of the upright of the T in LIBERTY. A very nice cent. 1817 N-16 R1 15-Star Obverse PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty light to medium brown and steel mixed with darker bluish steel and olive tones on the obverse. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas, particularly on the obverse. The notable marks are a diagonal nick on the jaw and a faint diagonal hairline over NE in ONE. MDS with a small but clearly defined cud break above the first A in AMERICA. The short dash to the right from the top of the F in OF is dull but still visible. Earliest die state with smooth, reflective fields on both sides and no trace of die rust. The repunching on the 9 (may be an undertype 8 or a misplaced 9) is sharp. MDS with microscopic lumps from die rust covering the portrait and most of the field inside the wreath. Most likely from the Randall Hoard of mint state cents dated 1816-1820. Our grade is MS63. Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. The best identifying mark is a small splash of darker steel brown toning nestled between the C in CENT and the leaf to the left. Nicely struck EDS. The die line from the bust is strong, all the stars show radial lines, and the fields are slightly reflective. 1830 N-6 R4 Medium Letters PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Choice glossy medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. No spots or stains, only a few minor contact marks. The notable ones are a tiny rim bruise under the 8 in the date and another above star 10. Nicely struck MDS with a faint die crack from the bust tip that fades out as it approaches the dentils between the date and star 1. This example is very nicely struck for a Medium Letters 1830 cent. The vast majority of this variety come with significant weakness along the top of the head and buns, on the lowest curl, on the stars, and in several parts of the wreath. There are no weakly struck areas on this cent, and every star shows complete radial lines. A premium example of this very popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is EF40. A minor planchet clip that affects the dentils between stars 2 & 3 and the opposing ones at D-S is the best identifying feature of this attractive cent. The surfaces are frosty and the only notable marks are a faint hairline scratch from the upper point of star 1 to just over the bust tip and a puff of darker toning inside the C in CENT. LDS with a very light die crack from the bottom of the E in CENT to the leaf under the adjacent C. 1834 N-2 R1 Small 8, Large Stars, Medium Letters PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light bluish steel brown with nearly half the mint color remaining on both sides. No spots or stains. The only marks are a tiny scuff near the dentils under star 3 and another vertical one down from the left point of star 11. Neither mark is visible without a strong glass and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. M-LDS. The die crack that meanders through STA and the wreath has an extension up to the base of the first A in AMERICA, and the tiny spikes up from the dentils under the date are gone. There is a dull double profile on the nose and stronger doubling on RTY in LIBERTY (all caused by die bounce). A curved planchet clip affects the dentils between the date and star 1 and the opposing dentils over TA in STATES. A beautiful cent and an obvious mint error. Graded MS63 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #20533. Graded MS70- by Ted Naftzger when he owned the coin. Our grade is MS64. 1835 N-1 R1 Head of 1834, Large 8 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate with a few tiny peeps of faded mint red remaining in protected areas. There is a subtle hint of woodgrained darker steel brown toning on the obverse, most noticeably from star 2 to the throat. Just a few trivial contact marks, including a couple faint horizontal hairlines under stars 7 & 8 and a vertical nick on the lower part of the neck above the 18. MDS. The obverse is cracked through most of the stars, as always, but the radial branch crack from below star 11 to the dentils has not formed. There is a strong double profile from the forehead down to the chin plus weaker doubling on several of the stars (caused by die bounce). A very nice cent. Our grade is AU58. Noyes photo #56765. Had to be close to getting an "RB" designation from PCGS. The satiny mint frost is unbroken and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. Just a few trivial marks from flawless. A light nick or planchet flake on the rim at star 6 and a speck of carbon at the dentils right of star 13 are good identifying marks. MDS. Lapping has removed the tiny lumps around the outside berry under TE in UNITED, but a few remain tucked tightly around the berry left of the bottom of the C in CENT.
