Lot 839
1798, 98 over 97. 16 stars. PCGS graded MS-65. Fully white and quite frosty and a coin with a considerable amount of appeal and history. First off, the obverse die was almost certainly engraved in 1797 and not used, then overdated with a tiny 8 that allows the much larger 7 to show clearly beneath it. The obverse also has 13 stars while the reverse die shows 16 stars. Why this difference? Well, as more states joined the union, new dies were engraved with the new current number of stars, until sometime in 1797 or 1798 the Mint finally reverted back to the original 13 stars for coins, as the engravers were having trouble squeezing ever more stars into their tiny dies! Notice too, that the reverse shows the peak number of 16 stars, and the eagle is an entirely different style than that seen on later dimes or other dies of this series. The eagle's neck is longer, and the shield has 16 alternating vertical stripes (reflecting the 16 states as well). The eagle's tail has two rows of feathers while all other dies show three rows of feathers. And to add even further interest, this same reverse die was used to coin gold Capped Bust quarter eagle's of 1797! Only 27,550 struck. Pop 4; 1 finer in 65+. (PCGS # 4468) Estimate Value $45,000 - 50,000

Lot 840
1807. JR-1, Rarity 2. NGC graded MS-63. A nice frosty white example for the type collector. Although these 1807 dimes were struck in large numbers, not many are knwon in true mint state grades, with collector demand always running high and few being offered. The strike is sharp and die clashing is not as heavy as commonly seen on this particular date. Pop 24; 39 finer, 22 in 64, 14 in 65, 2 in 66, 1 in 67. Estimate Value $8,000 - 9,000
