Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 6
1793 S-14 R5- Liberty Cap PCGS graded XF45. Glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning in a few of the protected areas. The surfaces are smooth, void of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. There are a few minor contact marks, including a light rim bruise over the Y in LIBERTY and a small rim nick left of the cap, but none of the marks is distracting. The best identifying mark is a thin struck-through line that meanders through the numerator of the fraction (caused by a tiny piece of thread or wire on the die, as struck). LDS, Breen state III, with a very subtle bulge at NT in CENT. The always-present bisecting die crack on the obverse is clear. A wonderful example of the 1793 Liberty Cap Cent type. Our grade is EF40 net VF35. Noyes says EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#4, his photo #25008. Del Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#5. It's nice when we all agree. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer, 1 in 50+, 1 in 53+ for the variety. Estimate Value $90,000 - UP

1794 S-20b R5 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 PCGS Genuine, VF Details. Attractive glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth (but not "Smoothed as stated on the PCGS label"), and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No corrosion, verdigris, or spots. The only defects are a rim bruise left of the lowest curl and a tiny planchet flake (as struck) over the right edge of the R in AMERICA. The date is strong, the legends are clear, and the edge lettering is bold. MDS, Breen state I late. There is the faintest hint of a bulge from the rim to the upper part of the chin but no trace of die rust in the left side of the wreath. Our grade is VF25. Bland says VF30 and CC#2 in his revised census. Noyes says VF25 and tied for CC#4. A wonderful example of this tough "1794 Head of 1793" variety, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $30,000 - UP

1794 S-29 R2 Head of 1794 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice frosty medium brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints and hints of very faded mint red in a few protected areas on the reverse. The only contact marks are a barely visible rim bruise at the B in LIBERTY, a tiny rim nick at TY, and a short, very faint hairline in the field off the chin. A beautiful frosty cent with a hint of light friction on the highest points of the devices. Sharply struck everywhere except at NIT, which displays some tiny planchet chips that didn't completely strike out due to the usual weak impression at that spot. EDS, Breen state I, without the die crack through the R in AMERICA. Plated in the important Elder-Gilbert catalog (Thomas L. Elder 10/12/1910:24). Listed by Noyes as AU55 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21757. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#6. Our grade is AU55. A beautiful cent with choice eye appeal and an outstanding provenance. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 2 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 65+ for the variety. Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1794 S-44 R1 Head of 1794 PCGS graded AU58. Choice frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate. A beautiful, sharply struck cent that shows very light wear on the highpoints and only a few minor contact marks. The best identifying mark is a small dig under the right edge of the E in UNITED. LDS, Breen state V, with all the die cracks described by Breen. A very attractive example of the "Short Bust" type of 1794 cent. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45. Noyes says EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#7, his photo #60423. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 2 finer in 63 for the variety. Lot 10
1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS graded G4, CAC Approved. The devices are a rather glossy light to medium brown while the protected areas are a darker shade of reddish chocolate. Extremely fine granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few very faint hairline scratches on the reverse, none visible without a glass. The obverse is several points sharper than the reverse, which is normal for this variety, and a split grade of 6+/2 would be more descriptive than a single numerical grade in our opinion. The date is complete and easily readable, and about half the tiny stars are visible (although many are faint or muddled into the dentils). MDS with the usual swelling or buckling on the reverse that causes that side to wear more quickly than the obverse. Our net grade is AG3+, close to G4. Bland says VG7 obverse and Fair-2 reverse with an overall grade of G4. Noyes says VG8 net G5 and tied for CC#25. Obviously these Starred Reverse cents are a challenge to grade due to the disparity in sharpness between the two sides. But the pool of pieces that have received PCGS grades (rather than "Genuine" ratings) is relatively small, and not many of the graded pieces have received CAC Approval. So this cent has a lot going for it. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $16,000 - UP

1794 S-71 R2 Head of 1795 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Frosty medium brown and chocolate with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply struck offering excellent eye appeal. The only defects are a tick on the top of the 7 and a couple more above the 9. MDS, Breen state IV, showing clashmarks on both sides and a few light die cracks on the obverse. The crack at RT in LIBERTY has not formed. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #28851. Bland also says EF40 but tied for CC#7. A sharp, very attractive cent. Our grade is EF40+. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer in 61 for the variety. Estimate Value $17,000 - UP

1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Clipped Planchet. Partial Double Profile. Frosty light chocolate brown with subtle hints of reddish chocolate brown toning in protected areas at the bottom of the reverse. Smooth surfaces, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. Just a few insignificant marks, including a thin vertical nick in the center of the jawline and a tiny nick inside the top of the E in CENT. MDS, Breen state III. The die crack at TY is clear but the small lump has not formed between the hair and the T. A slightly curved planchet clip (as struck) affects the dentils left of the date and the opposing ones at TE in STATES. In addition there is doubling from die bounce on the tip of the nose, lips, and chin with stronger doubling along the upper edge of the bust. Called VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#14 in the Noyes census, his photo #58200. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40.
