1844 N-5 R1 First 4 Repunched PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty tan and light olive with generous traces of mint red showing on the reverse. Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable mark is a thin, light horizontal nick in the field under star 7. MDS, die state c early. The repunching on the first 4 is obvious and a very fine die crack passes through the tops of ME in AMERICA, but the cud break on the rim under star 1 has not formed. Our grade is AU55. The only mark on otherwise choice satiny surfaces is a tiny flake in the planchet between the bases of the 4 & 7, as struck. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars. M-LDS, die state d early. The die crack at MER is strong and the section outlined by the crack it shifted outward slightly. The repunching on the 18 is clear. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#4 overall but finest of the later die state by a wide margin. The attribution and Tucker provenance are noted on the PCGS label. A few microscopic pinpricks over star 11, another on the truncation over the 7, and a thin diagonal nick right of the eye are the notable marks, but none is visible without a glass. M-LDS, die state c. There are two die cracks up to the rim from the R in AMERICA but no cud break. A small low spot shows at the top of the inner hair bun and another over the N in CENT, both caused by debris stuck on the dies. Our grade is EF45. Comes with a nice provenance. 1849 N-8 R2 Repunched 9 (or 9 over 8) PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. No notable defects, only a faint rub on the highest points around the ear. A beautiful cent with choice mint state eye appeal. E-MDS, die state b. Repunching is still visible at the right bottom of the 9 (sometimes called evidence of a 9 over 8 overdate, which may be true). A die crack meanders through the legend outside the wreath and the evidence of the doubled reverse die is obvious. The edges of the planchet are beveled, which is a characteristic of this die state. This cent is choice except for a diagonal nick under the eye and a spot of shallow carbon on the rim above star 6. Neither mark is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent.
