1796 S-117 R5+ Draped Bust VG8. Sharpness VF20 but the surfaces are covered with fine to moderate roughness, and there are a few small spots of greenish verdigris at the dentils over the second A in AMERICA. Rather glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with splashes of reddish light chocolate brown on both sides. The date and legends are all bold. Great detail but not very attractive. Nonetheless this was the best example of the variety in the famous Holmes collection. MDS, Breen state III. A fine die crack extends through the tops of RTY. Estimate Value $500 - UP

1798 S-154 R4+ Large 8 with Style I Hair PCGS graded VG10, CAC Approved. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with smooth surfaces and no notable contact marks. This cent was struck two times. The first strike was about 15% off center to K-4. The cent was flipped over and struck a second time, this strike being properly centered on the planchet. Bold evidence of the first strike is visible on both sides, and an indent from a second planchet is located in the dentils right of the fraction. LDS, Breen state III, with a die crack from the bust to the rim and obvious swelling in a few places on the reverse. Traces of diagonal reeding can be found on the edge, which is not uncommon on some 1797 & 1798 varieties. An attractive example of a wonderful mint error. Our grade is VG10+. The attribution and Fricke provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 50, 1 in 64 for the variety. Estimate Value $200 - UP

1800 S-205 R4 VF25. Ten points sharper but there are too many contact marks for the sharpness grade. The horizontal die crack from the rim to the hair under the ribbon is clear and die clashmarks show on both sides. A nice cent in spite of the marks, near the lower end of the condition census for the variety. Estimate Value $600 - UP

1800 S-205 R4 PCGS graded VF30. The obverse is a slightly glossy mix of medium and darker chocolate brown while the reverse is glossy light to medium chocolate. The field before the portrait is dull from uniform extremely faint granularity and there is a dull dent at the bottom of the first S in STATES. The only other notable defects are a planchet crease or fold in the metal at the dentils over ER in LIBERTY with similar voids at the opposing area at the rim right of the denominator (all as struck). M-LDS, Breen state II. The die crack from the rim to the hair under the ribbon is weak but visible. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net F15.
