1808 S-277 R2 EF40. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better and choice except for a dull nick at the dentils over the L in LIBERTY plus a smaller nick in the dentils at star 3 and another at the bottom of the reverse. Very attractive glossy light brown and tan with steel brown highpoints. Great eye appeal in spite of the few small marks. MDS, Breen state IV. Star 1 is weak but visible, the weakness caused by die failure at the opposing area on the reverse. Estimated Value $4,000-UP

1809 S-280 R2 NGC graded AU55. Frosty dark steel brown and chocolate. The reverse is lustrous but the luster on the obverse is a bit subdued due to a thin layer of natural oxidation. The surfaces are smooth and choice except for a very faint hairline scratch on the cheek and some extremely faint roughness at stars 5-7. MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks at the top of the wreath. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF40. Estimated Value $3,000-UP

1809 S-280 R2 VF20. Sharpness VF35 but the majority of the planchet is covered with microscopic roughness that is partially hidden under attractive chocolate and olive brown toning. There are a couple fine scratches hidden in the toning on the portrait and a collection of tiny pits under NE in ONE. No verdigris. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with a single die crack from the E in STATES to the wreath. The repunching on the 9 is obvious. Estimated Value $750-UP

Smooth and attractive for the grade, close to F12. No notable marks, roughness, or verdigris. MDS. The date and legends are strong and the overdate is obvious. Estimated Value $300-UP

1811 S-287 R2 NGC graded AU58. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with flowline luster covering the fields and protected areas on both sides. Looks choice to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a small spot of corrosion at the dentil tips under both 1's in the date and a couple more tiny ones over NE in ONE. Each of these small spots has been smoothed to remove the verdigris. Otherwise this cent is beautiful. MDS, Breen state III, with a subtle bulge from the second 1 in the date through star 13 to star 12. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net EF40. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

1811 S-287 R2 PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved. Glossy chocolate brown delicately mixed with slightly lighter and darker shades of brown and chocolate. Attractive satiny mint luster covers all but the highest points of the devices and the eye appeal is excellent. A tiny flake on the diagonal of the N in CENT is the best identifying mark. LDS, Breen state VI, with the upper points of stars 8 & 9 bent towards the rim due to flowline wear. A nice cent. Our grade is AU50. The attribution and March Wells provenance are noted on the PCGS Label. Estimated Value $3,000-UP

1812 S-288 R2 Large Date ANACS graded Unc Details Reverse Corroded Net EF40. Lustrous olive and dark bluish steel. The obverse is choice with outstanding eye appeal but there is fine roughness along the left edge of the reverse affecting UNITED STAT plus a patch of similar roughness under the end of the wreath stem. Specks of shallow verdigris are visible in those roughened areas. Otherwise the reverse is choice as well. LDS, Breen state III. The legend at the upper part of the reverse is solidly joined to the rim. Our grade is MS60 sharpness net EF40, consistent with the ANACS assessment. The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Estimated Value $1,000-UP

1812 S-289 R1 Large Date VF25. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown with lots of frosty lighter brown in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Smooth and quite nice for the grade, void of any notable marks or other defects. MDS with die clashmarks inside the wreath. In addition stars 1-7 are sharply doubled as is the truncation of the bust over the first 1, a result of die bounce. The repunching at the left top of the 2 remains clear. Estimated Value $400-UP

Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye appeal remains outstanding. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate. Flowline luster shows in the protected areas on both sides. 1813 S-292 R2 VG7+. Off Center. Very slightly sharper with microscopic roughness under rather glossy chocolate brown and olive toning. No verdigris, only a few minor contact marks. The notable marks are three nicks that look like incuse dentils on the unstruck part of the rim behind the head. Struck 10-15% off center to K-8 leaving the bottom part of the 18, stars 1-5, and most of UNITED STATES off the planchet. An attractive mint error in spite of the imperfect surfaces. 1813 S-293 R2 NGC graded AU50. Frosty olive brown with slightly lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. No roughness or verdigris, only minor contact marks. The notable ones are a pinprick on the bust, a few more in the field right of star 2, and a very light scratch between stars 4 & 5. E-MDS, Breen state IV (Breen's die states II and IV are reversed), with a fine die crack through the tops of ITED and through the bottoms of ED-S. The dentils are clearly defined around the entire obverse and most of the reverse. A nice example of this Classic Head cent. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF35. Estimated Value $1,500-UP
