1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap PCGS Genuine, Fine Details, Damaged. Sharpness VF30 but covered with fine roughness. The obverse is relatively smooth while the upper half of the reverse displays more obvious roughness plus traces of very shallow verdigris in protected areas. The only notable mark is a diagonal nick on the jaw near the throat. Glossy dark chocolate and olive brown with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state II, with a very subtle wave at NT in CENT. The date and legends are complete and strong. A decent 1793 Liberty Cap cent. Our grade is net F12. Estimated Value $10,000-UP

1794 S-24 R1 F12. The "Apple Cheeks" variety. Sharpness VF25 but there are two dull and rather obvious old scratches from the nose and cheek to the hair under the ear plus a shallow pitmark near the rim left of the lowest curl. The rest of the planchet appears smooth but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity under uniform glossy dark olive brown toning. E-MDS with no die cracks and just a hint of swelling inside the wreath. The date and legends are clear. Estimated Value $500-UP

1794 S-25 R3 F12+. Sharpness VF20 but both sides have been lightly burnished, especially the portrait and obverse fields. The reason for the burnishing is unclear since there does not appear to have been any significant roughness on either side. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is a small pinprick dig just left of the numerator in the fraction. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. MDS showing die clashmarks on the reverse and a fine double profile from the forehead down to the lips. Struck with the dies out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel) causing a very strong strike on the lower part of the obverse and opposing upper part of the reverse while leaving weakness at ERTY and along the bottom of the reverse. The notable marks are a rim nick over the E in LIBERTY and a short scratch in the field under the cap. Rather glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate toning on the devices. EDS. Struck on a heavy planchet that weighs 204.0 grains, closer to the thick planchet standard of 208.0 grains rather than the thin planchet standard of 168.0 grains. Apparently this was a thick planchet that did not receive the edge lettering prior to being struck. An interesting piece and quite rare. Estimated Value $400-UP

1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge VG7. Clipped Planchet. Glossy olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The planchet is mostly smooth but a glass reveals microscopic granularity in the fields and protected areas. No marks or other defects. EDS. There is a tiny planchet clip over the N in UNITED. The date is strong and the legends are readable although some of the letters outside the wreath are starting to fade into the rim. Estimated Value $300-UP

Lot 112
1795 S-80 R5+ Jefferson Head Cent PCGS Genuine, Fine Details, Damaged. Variety with a Plain Edge. Sharpness near VF20 but damaged. There are more than a half dozen dull dents, mostly on the obverse, plus a straight clip out of the planchet at the rim behind the portrait (probably created post-striking). The strongest dents are in the center of the reverse, and these created a bulge in the center of the obverse. Dark steel brown and chocolate. The planchet is covered with fine granularity but there is no verdigris. Nicely detailed in spite of the obvious damage. The date is clear except for the bottom of the 7, which is affected by one of the dents, and the legends are complete. Even some of the nicer examples of this variety are missing parts of the legends or design elements due to strike issues or wear, and problem-free examples are unknown. Seldom offered in any grade. Our grade is net AG3. Listed on page 99 in the "Redbook." Weight 191.7 grains. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $10,000-UP
