Lot 55
1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS Genuine, Fine Details, Damaged. Sharpness VF20 but there are numerous contact marks scattered over the obverse, including a half dozen small dents or planchet voids, nicks, and fine scratches. In addition there is a thin diagonal planchet fissure from just off the tip of the nose down to the field before the neck. The reverse has only minor contact marks but there are traces of shallow reddish chocolate brown scale in protected areas on an otherwise smooth planchet. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The date and legends are complete and strong. Not perfect but quite acceptable for this very popular variety, our first Federal Large Cent. Our grade is net VG10. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $10,000-UP

1793 S-2 R4+ Chain AMERICA PCGS graded Fine Details, Damaged. Sharpness VF25 or better but lightly burnished and recolored glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. There are a dozen hair-thin streaks of lighter silvery toning on the obverse, and these catch your eye. Perhaps a more skilled recoloring would eliminate this problem. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and there are no notable contact marks. Nicely struck with a strong date and legends. MDS, Breen state II, with a subtle wave under the date and no die clashmarks. The date and legends are all strong. Our grade is net F15. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $10,000-UP

Lot 57
1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA PCGS graded VG Details, Damaged. Sharpness F15 but covered with extremely fine granularity under mostly glossy dark olive brown and steel toning with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning on the devices. The surfaces have been lightly smoothed and myriad microscopic hairline scratches left behind from the smoothing are hidden in the toning. No verdigris. There are a few rim bumps on the obverse, including one left of the date and another over the T in LIBERTY, plus a long nick or planchet void under ES in STATES. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. The date and legends are complete and clear. Our grade is net VG8. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $4,000-UP

Lot 58
1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with Periods Fair-2. A considerably sharper coin, perhaps Fine-12 overall, but it was plugged through the R in LIBERTY to the opposing second S in STATES. In addition LIBERTY and the date were reengraved in letters and numerals that are larger than the original ones seen on the variety. The planchet is granular or lightly corroded, and the obverse fields have been scraped to smooth away most of the roughness. No additional marks or verdigris. Toned an attractive and slightly glossy medium chocolate and olive brown. Estimated Value $1,500-UP

Lot 59
1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large LIBERTY G5. Vine & Bars Edge. Glossy medium chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The notable ones are a few light rim bruises on the left side of the obverse and a small planchet chip in the field off the end of the lowest curl. The portrait and LIBERTY are strong but the date is weak (although readable). The legends on the reverse are clear except for weakness on OF and ONE CENT. Not perfect but nice for the grade, especially for a 1793 Wreath Cent. Estimated Value $1,000-UP

Lot 60
1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge PCGS Genuine, XF Details, Damaged. Sharpness EF45 but dark olive brown and chocolate under highly glossy surfaces thanks to a thin coating of lacquer. Traces of microscopic roughness show in the field around the bust tip and the fields on the reverse are a bit uneven. No contact marks or verdigris. E-MDS, Breen state II, with an obvious wave from the rim behind the portrait to the hair and jaw but not into the field before the portrait. A very sharp Wreath Cent that offers great eye appeal in spite of the minor surfaces issues. Our grade is net VF25. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $3,000-UP

1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge PCGS Genuine, VF Details, Damaged. Sharpness VF30 but expertly plugged through BE in LIBERTY and the opposing 10 in the denominator. The work was done with exceptional skill and it is very difficult to detect. Glossy dark olive brown and chocolate with uniform microscopic granularity covering the planchet. No verdigris or contact marks. This cent is imperfect but it offers nice eye appeal. MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks at RICA and the fraction. The date and legends are all strong. Our grade is net VG10. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $1,500-UP
