Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1582
1866 $5 Liberty. Motto PCGS PF66 DC. PCGS graded Proof 66 Deep Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. This is an incredibly rare Proof coin, not just in absolute terms of the small number known, but for its stunning quality. Only 30 minted in Proof and this is undoubtedly as nice as this issue can be found. The strike is precise and absolute, with every curl on Liberty's head and central star line bold. Matching quality on the reverse with each feather of the eagle, and surrounding letters fully formed and frosty against the deeply mirrored fields. Rich but light golden toning is found on the obverse and reverse.

The depth of the contrast between the fields and devices confirms this was an early strike when the dies were able to impart the greatest Cameo contrast, and this is the most desirable and dramatic designation available on a Proof gold coin. Add to this fact that the issue of 1866 was the first to display the new Motto of IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse, and the impecible quality and you have a sure winner. From a point in history, 1866 was the first year of peace after the devastating Civil War which ravaged many of the Southern, Eastern and Central states of this country. Rebuilding and recovery would take more than a generation, particularly in the South. Hence, few collectors were focused on obtaining and keeping such a coin, and based on the certification data at least a few of these 1866 Proof half eagles entered circulation for a time. Thus finding one so exceptional is truly an event.

The combination of the PCGS and NGC data yields no more than 14 individual specimens (4 of which are mishandled Proofs with circulation evidence!), and it is virtually certain that some duplication exists between thoee numbers. Two other exampless are impounded, one at the Smithsonian, another at the ANS, leaving perhaps 8-12 pieces that are available to collectors today. Examples of this issue are seldom available, with auction data showing a five or six year span between offerings of this rarity. Thus, any collector with a desire to own an example of this date had best step up to the plate and be ready to battle other bidders to capture this memorable Gem! Pop 1; none finer. Tied for the finest at either grading service (PCGS # 98461) Estimated Value $60,000 - 70,000

1899 $5 Liberty PCGS Proof 65. PCGS graded Proof 65+DCAM. CAC Approved. Only 99 minted of which perhaps 50 to 70 exist today. This is one of the most stunning, well preserved examples we've seen in decades! The depth of contrast is perfectly matched against the backdrop of undisturbed fields and needle sharp devices. Every nuance of the die is bold, with each star, digit and device fully frosted by the dies, while the surrounding fields offer the bold mirroring expected. A flashy white gem proof with just a hint of copper blush when closely examined. Pop 2; 4 finer (PCGS # 98494) Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000
