Liberty Nickels

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1391
1883. Without "CENTS". PCGS graded Proof 67 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides with golden russet, with a few traces of rose and crimson. This one is decidedly one of the finest known of this important first year of issue in Proof, not only technically, but with such stunning toning it is undoubtedly one of the most desirable around today. The original Proof mintage came in at only 5,219 for this initial style. After a few months of production of the new Liberty nickel design, the reverse design was modified to include the word "CENTS" below the large V as certain folks had taken some of these new nickels and gold plated them, in order to pass them off as $5 gold pieces to the unsuspecting! A fabulous example of this popular issue. Pop 6; 1 finer in 67+. (PCGS # 3878) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,700.
