Lot 2031
1840-O. NGC graded AU-55. Nice even gold toning on both sides with slightly deeper gold hues on the uppermost devices. Only 33,580 struck and from that meager beginning a scant 125 or so are known today. The strike is decent, although the left thigh of the eagle shows moderate striking softness, common to this issue. This is one of the finer examples technically, as most fall into the XF-40 to AU-55 range. Finer pieces quickly become prohibitive for most collectors to pursue, especially in any Mint State grade. Pop 20; 39 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7720) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,600.

Lot 2032
1842-O. NGC graded AU-50. Light even toning on both sides. The 1842-O is one of the tougher New Orleans issues to find at all, especially so in high grade. Furthermore, these usually come poorly stuck up, not so here, as Liberty has most of her hair definition and the eagle's thigh is sharper than most seen. Surface quality is attractive with minor scattered nicks from circulation. Only 19,800 struck, and today there are just over 100 known. Pop 12; 71 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7726) .
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700.

Lot 2033
1843-O. Small date, crosslet 4. NGC graded AU-55. Mostly untoned and rather well struck for the commonly seen weak issue. The obverse and reverse show scattered handling marks from circulation, but none are too deep. The mintmark is much larger on 1843-O quarter eagles than seen on the 1840-O or 1842-O coins, and this larger mintmark style continues in use after this year. The 1843-O is the most plentiful issue of the 1840s and these can be obtained in grades above the Choice Mint State level. Despite what the mintage implies, there are still likely fewer than 1,000 of these around today, a small sum when compared with many issues of the 19th Century (PCGS # 7731) .
Estimated Value $550 - 600.

Lot 2034
1843-O. Large date, plain 4. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC Approved. Lovely rich golden toning. This is the second rarest of the New Orleans issues, as the Large Date variety is quite scarce. Most collectors fail to realize just how scarce this issue is until they try to find a nice example. Only 76,000 believed to be struck but based on the number surviving this may be too generous. The website CoinFacts estimates that only 85 of these exist in all grades. On the Large Date, the 1 nearly touches both the truncation and the dentils below, also the 4 has a plain crossbar, while on the Small Date, the 4 has a Crosslet 4 with a serif on the end of the horizontal stroke of the 4. A prize for the Coronet quarter eagle specialist! Pop 8; 22 finer. (PCGS # 7732) .
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500.

1844-C. PCGS graded MS-61. Lovely rich gold toning. The fields are semi-reflective. Examination of Liberty's face finds a couple of old nicks, but they blend into her cheek. The surrounding fields are generally clean and attractive, and this one has a decent strike for an early Charlotte Mint issue. Only 11,622 struck and all Mint State examples are highly prized and of the highest rarity. Pop 3; 3 finer, 2 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 7735) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 14,000.

Lot 2036
1845-O. NGC graded AU-55. Frosty and mostly untoned. This issue is a complete contrast to the 1843-O Small Date, first off, only 4,000 were struck, and from that meager start perhaps 75 exist today. Curiously the entire issue of 1845-O quarter eagles was delivered on January 22, 1846 so these were included with the 1846-O coins. The surfaces are pleasing, with bright yellow gold throughout and luster in the protected areas. As nearly always seen on this issue, there is a shallow mint-made depression in the field behind Liberty's neck curls down to the point of the 13th star. Trading is sparse for this issue, and high grade examples like this rarely come to market. It may be years before a comparable coin appears! This issue compares favorably with some of the rarest C and D mint coins, but is priced much lower--for now. When the true rarity of the 1845-O quarter eagle is better understood, expect coins like this to become prohibitive in price. Pop 8; 11 finer, 10 in 58, 1 in 60. (PCGS # 7739) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.

Lot 2037
1846-O. NGC graded AU-50. CAC Approved. Mostly untoned with satiny golden hues throughout. The surfaces are pleasing, as there are minimal handling marks from brief circulation. Rather sharp for this notoriously weak issue, as all of Liberty's curls are full, and only the left leg of the eagle shows minor softness along with his claw below. A tough coin in all grades, with perhaps 175 known today, few seen finer than a low end Mint State grade. Highly collectible and elusive when found this nice. Only 62,000 struck (PCGS # 7743) .
Estimated Value $800 - 850.

Lot 2038
1847-O. NGC graded AU-58. Lightly toned and scarce this close to mint state, with most of the known survivors falling well short of the technical quality here. It is important to note that the 1847-O is known as the worst struck New Orleans issue, and this one is actually sharper than many seen despite apparent softness in the legends and eagle. The surfaces are pleasing and clean, and numerous thin die cracks exist on the reverse. Pop 45; 34 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7747) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

1850-O. PCGS graded AU-50. Interesting pale blue and orange toning on both sides. Only 84,000 minted, from which perhaps 225 pieces exist today. This one is in the top third of those known. Usual soft strike on the eagle, but the surfaces are attractive. Pop 20; 61 finer. (PCGS # 7758) .

1851-O. NGC graded AU-58 PQ. CAC Approved. Untoned and well struck. This one has the doubled date, with the 51 both showing repunching low. The strike is sharp on the obverse but a bit soft on the reverse, especially on the left thigh of the eagle which is blunt as nearly always seen. Still a scarce issue with no more a tiny fraction of the original mintage surviving. Almost mint state, with ample luster to please the eye. Pop 109; 43 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7762) .

1852-O. NGC graded AU-55. Untoned with bright reflective surfaces. Desipite its high mintage--relative to other 1852 branch mint coins, the 1852-O is quite a tough date to find in grades approaching mint state. This attractive AU-55 example should please most date and mint specialists (PCGS # 7766) .

1860 Type 2. NGC graded AU-58. CAC Approved. Untoned with reflective fields that show a few light marks from handling. Although 22,563 were struck, today the total number that survive is likely around 200 pieces. This is one of the higher grade examples seen, although a fair number exist in lower Mint State grades. Nice collector quality! Pop 17; 24 finer.
