Lot 419
1809 C-1 R4 F12. Slightly sharper with microscopic granularity under slightly glossy medium chocolate brown and steel toning. No verdigris, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a fine scratch in the field over the head and a small dig between the L & F in HALF. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a fine die crack through the top of MERI. The reverse is rotated about 20 degrees CCW. A decent example of this rare variety.

1809/6 C-5 R1 Overdate 9 over Inverted 9 VF30. Ten points sharper with light contact marks scattered over both sides, none distracting but too many to ignore. A minor planchet lamination at star 2 is a good identifying mark. Glossy light olive and steel brown with some golden tan in protected areas. Scarce EDS, Manley state 1.0. The 9 over inverted 9 (the inverted 9 is often called a 6) is clear. In addition, the base of a stray 1 is clearly visible extending down from the truncation over the right side of the 8 (a feature not mentioned by Manley or Breen).

1809 C-6 R1 AU50. Sharpness near mint state but there are a few faint contact marks, including a hairline scratch on the bust and another from the chin to the curl on the neck. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty luster covering the fields and protected areas on both sides. A small spot of lighter brown toning midway between star 2 and the chin is the best identifying mark. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. The reverse is rotated 140 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot orientation.

1811 C-2 R3 VG10. Slightly sharper but recolored glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. No corrosion or verdigris. The notable marks are a dull nick on the bust tip and a tiny pit on the upright of the T in UNITED. LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die clashmark over the 11 is clear.

1825 C-1 R3 EF45. Glossy light golden olive and chocolate. A spot of lighter brown toning in the hair at the shoulder and a couple small nicks in the field between star 2 and the throat are the notable marks. Rare EDS Manley state 1.0. The obverse is uncracked and the fields on both sides are prooflike. In addition there is a small lump on the edge at star 12 as often see on this variety.

Includes 1825 C-1 R3 E-MDS M1.0 late (the die crack from the top of the obverse reaches down through the ear but the small lump right of the F in OF has not formed) VF25+, and 1826 C-1 R1 LDS M4.0 with the reverse rotated 20 degrees clockwise EF40 (removed from a PCGS slab graded XF45, label #1144.45/24855256 included). Both are glossy brown and chocolate with excellent eye appeal. Lot of 2 coins.

Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN (NGC label #2031047-012 included, and it shows the attribution).

This piece offers superior eye appeal for the grade, just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The best identifying mark is a small arc of darker toning in the dentils over the F in OF. Nicely struck E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. Faint die clashmarks are visible on the reverse and the fields on both sides are slightly reflective. Noyes photo #74347.
