Lot 253
1662 Massachusetts Oak Tree Twopence Noe-30 Rarity-4 PCGS XF Details, Damage. Variety with a Small 2 in the date. A mostly sharp example but the planchet is wavy (which is common for these small, thin silver pieces) and the wear is uneven as a result. No notable marks or other defects. Nicely centered and most of the legends are clear, even bold in areas. The date is complete and easily readable although the 2 is relatively weak, and the denomination is strong. Most of the Oak Tree is clear. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF25. An acceptable example of this iconic Early American coinage. Weight 10.8 grains. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Listed on page 40 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

Lot 254
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-16 Rarity-2 NGC graded XF45. A Small Planchet Type. Choice frosty medium grayish steel with slightly lighter silvery steel toning on the devices. The surfaces are smooth and void of defects. The best identifying mark is a bit of dirt inside the S right of the Pine Tree. Although this is a Small Planchet type, the planchet for this example is large enough to comfortably contain all the legends and devices with some room to spare. The legends are complete, strong, and well balanced throughout. A premium example of this early American colonial issue. Come from the famous collection of Eric P. Newman. The variety attribution and Eric P. Newman Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. Weight 68.2 grains. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
Ex the Eric P. Newman Collection (Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society).

(1667-70) St Patrick Farthing B-213c, Griffee 42-9/9a NGC graded VF20. Slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Reasonably smooth with only minor roughness, mostly in protected areas. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a dull nick on the left side of the X in REX. The strike is even and nicely centered on the planchet, and the legends are clear. John Griffee knew of 3 examples of the die variety, and this piece is superior to the example in his collection. Listed on page 43 in the "Redbook." The Eric P. Newman Collection provenance is noted on the NGC label. Estimate Value $600 - UP

1788 Massachusetts Cent Ryder 8-C Rarity-5 VF25. Type with a period following MASSACHUSETTS. Attractive frosty medium chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected areas. The sharpness is significantly better than VF25 but there are some old, light scratches under LTH in WEALTH and a few more left of the C in COMMON. These marks are not especially distracting and the overall eye appeal of this piece is quite nice. The obverse (Eagle side) is sharp and choice. Listed on page 61 in the "Redbook." Lot 261
1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny Vlack 25-87C Rarity-8 F15. Slightly glossy medium chocolate and olive brown. The planchet is mostly smooth but a glass reveals microscopic granularity in the fields and protected areas while the devices are smooth. No verdigris, only a few trivial contact marks. A fine pin scratch across the leg of the seated figure and a minor rim bruise over the E in GEORGIVS are the only notable marks. The reverse was struck from a badly worn die so the details on that side are considerably weaker than those on the obverse, but if you use some imagination you can make out the 87 of the date. Both this and the discovery coin have a very bold die crack on the obverse suggesting this die suffered a catastrophic failure quickly, possibly on the first strike. This piece is from a slightly later die state than the discovery coin as there is a small cud break at the upper end of the crack above the I. This new variety was discovered early in 2012 and reported through the newsletter of the Colonial Coin Collector's Club (C-4). No additional examples have been found since that announcement--until now. The example offered here has slightly more wear than the discovery coin but the surfaces on this piece are clearly superior. A very important opportunity for the advanced collector of the coppers struck in Colonial America. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
