Lot 1708
1850. PCGS graded EF-45. Well struck and untoned. This is the first year of issue for the new denomination of the "double eagle" or $20 gold coin. 1852. PCGS graded MS-61. Quite frosty and attractive. Not many of these early double eagles survived in mint state given the paltry population numbers. However, the vast majority that were struck circulated, and those that did survive are generally in the VF to AU grade range. For the collector who appreciates eye appeal and quality, here is a lustrous coin to consider. Pop 48; 54 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8906) Estimate Value $6,000 - 6,500

1855-S. PCGS graded AU-58+. CAC. PQ. Wonderful light golden toning. A nice looking coin that offers both an early $20 from the Type I style, as well as the historic San Francisco Mint, which was coining literally tons of gold coming out of the hills, rivers and valleys of the gold fields in California. While not a rare issue, when found this well preserved, this piece would make a welcome addition to any collection. Pop 2; 99 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8916) Estimate Value $3,500 - 4,000

1856-S. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck and untoned. Very close to MS-63 in terms of quality, with the eye appeal certainly at the choice level. These large double eagles are struck in fairly soft gold, so any nicks or bagmarks tend to be magnified by the surfaces, and the open fields and Liberty's cheek are always prone to even the slightest grazes from normal handling. Finding an example this attractive is certainly worthy of note, and any collector would do well in acquiring such a splendid example (PCGS # 8919) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1857-S. PCGS graded MS-65 20 Spiked Shield. SSCA 2816. CAC. Well struck and mostly untoned. In a gold label holder that was created for the SS Central America shipwreck coins by PCGS to differentiate these important coins as being recovered from this most famous shipwreck. Gems are highly desirable as Type 1 double eagles were virtually unobtainable prior to the recovery of these coins from the Central America shipwreck. Their luster and color is mesmurizing., especially when found in such incredible condition. If you have ever desired to own one of these historic relics, than make sure to view this coin and bid accordingly. Estimate Value $10,000 - 11,000

1858. PCGS graded MS-60. A nice example with lots of luster and scattered light marks. The surfaces are better than one would expect for the modest grade, with no deep or singularly detracting bagmarks. A scarcer date than many earlier issues, simply because this issue has not been found on the various shipwrecks recovered in the past two generations. Pop 6; 19 finer at PCGS. 1859-S. PCGS graded MS-61. CAC. Lovely golden toning with ample soft mint luster in the fields. The strike is bold throughout and the surfaces much nicer than one might expect for the modest grade. The color is a pleasing orange-gold, as usually seen on San Francisco double eagles of this era. Recall that a formidable amount of gold was found in the hills and streams of the Gold Country in California, and a lot of it went straight to the San Francisco Mint for refining and coining, then to be shipped to the east where most of these coins ended up in circulation. Of course a fair number of these coins circulated in the West as well. Pop 21; 16 finer (PCGS # 8928) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000
