Lot 1556
1908. NGC graded Proof 67. A nice superb gem Matte Proof. This is the first year of issue of the Indian quarter eagle design. Only 236 struck, which is a paltry sum for the first year of issue of new coinage design in Proof, even for a gold coin! The majority of the known survivors in Matte Proof fall into the respectible PR64 or 65 grade range, while Superb PR67 pieces like the one offered quite elusive by comparison. The elegance of Pratt's incuse design has won the artistic hearts of many collectors, and what better way to represent this prized first year of issue than with a Superb Gem Matte Proof like this? Pop 28; 3 finer, 2 in 67+, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 7957) Estimate Value $35,000 - 40,000

Lot 1557
1908. PCGS graded Proof 66+. A lovely example of this first year of issue. Only 236 struck and this is one of the finer examples sen by PCGS in Proof. The surfaces offer the seductive Matte proof perfection, with a hint of golden orange toning and incredible die struck perfection. The entire coin design by Bela Lyon Pratt stood previous coinage on its ear, but sinking the devices into the coin rather than raising them, thus the fields were the high point of the design, not the devices of the head of Liberty, the eagle and lettering--as they were sunk into the surface of the coins being struck. This radical new style turned heads, and dismayed many traditional collectors, but in the end these revolutionary designs were accepted, and collectors far and wide desire an example of this historic first year of isse of the Indian quarter eagle of 1908. Especially when found on an amazing high end proof like this! Pop 2; 4 finer in 67. (PCGS # 7957) Estimate Value $33,000 - 35,000
