1809, 9 over 6. PCGS graded AU-50 Brown. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attractive, void of any notable defects. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The dentils on the obverse are clear and the 9 over Inverted 9 feature (often called a 9 over 6) is obvious. Our grade is EF40+. The overdate feature is noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 1126) Estimated Value $300-UP

1810 C-1 R1 VF25. Frosty chocolate brown and steel. Close to VF30 but there is a tiny scratch off the chin. Otherwise this piece is quite nice for the grade. MDS. The repunching along the bottom of the 0 in the date is clear and the reverse is rotated 20 degrees CCW. Removed from a PCGS slab graded XF40 (PCGS label #1132.40/12396726 included). Estimated Value $300-UP

1811 C-2 R3 VF25. Sharpness EF40 but the planchet is covered with uniform microscopic roughness under very dark olive brown and steel toning. The surfaces display a bit of gloss but they are closer to matte. No verdigris, and the only mark is a dull scratch in the field before the face. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with clear die clashmarks above the 11 in the date. The die crack at OF and AMER is clear. Nicely struck for this variety with only minor weakness along the left edge of the reverse. This piece is plated on page 65 in the first edition of the Cohen half cent book to illustrate the variety. Estimated Value $2,500-UP

1825 C-1 R3 PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty light olive brown and steel blending to darker chocolate and olive brown in protected areas. Sharply struck and attractive, but there is a trace of friction on the devices plus a few microscopic hairlines and other contact marks on both sides, none notable. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with the reverse rotated 35 degrees CW. Our grade is net EF45+. Estimated Value $500-UP

1828 C-3 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown, more than a third of the mint color remaining. Essentially flawless except for a tiny planchet flake in the dentils above the right side of the E in AMERICA, as struck. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with light die clashmarks inside the wreath. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. Estimated Value $600-UP

1828 C-3 R1 VG10 Counterstamped Brunk A-1. Nice glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Smooth and attractive. Counterstamped with an "A" in the center of the obverse, an eagle at the left foot of the A, and an "H" at the bottom of the reverse. Estimated Value $40-UP

1829 C-1 R1 G6 Counterstamped Brunk T-17. Reddish dark chocolate with golden light brown highpoints. A couple points sharper but he surfaces are dull from microscopic granularity. Counterstamped with "CT" and the outline of a unicorn on both sides, and the counterstamps are strong. Brunk catalog # T-17 (old Brunk #6460). According to Brunk, these were issued by a United States merchant with the initials CT who sold Unicorn brand cigars. Over two dozen examples are known stamped on half cents of various dates, 1829 being the most common. Estimated Value $40-UP

1835 C-1 R1 NGC Uncirculated details, Obverse Scratched. A lustrous mint state half cent that has too many light contact marks on the obverse for an uncirculated grade. The only notable mark is a hairline scratch from the field above star 1 to the top edge of the bust near the neck. Frosty chocolate brown and steel. LDS with obvious die clashmarks on both sides. Our grade is net AU55. Estimated Value $100-UP

1835 C-1 R1 VF30 Counterstamped Brunk Y-2. Counterstamped on the obverse with "MY" and a Star above. The counterstamp is large and strongly impressed causing much of the reverse to be distorted. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and free of any notable defects. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. LDS, Manley state 2.0. Brunk lists 4 examples of this stamp on half cents (1811, 1833, and two examples of 1835) and one on a large cent (1835), but he does not speculate as to the origin of the stamp.
