1865. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. CAC Approved. An attractive example with generous mint luster. Few blazing copper-red satiny gems can be found nowadays with intense luster like this and grand eye appeal. What more could one ask from a beautiful representative of the post-Civil War period? A rounded impression is common enough for many Two-cent pieces imprinted by the stamp of the dies that struck this date and other years; however, we are happy to say that the present 1865 is a grand exception to that rule in being very sharp throughout including centers.Pop 189; 41 finer, 40 in 66, 1 in 67. 1865. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A highly lustrous Gem that has rich coppery to golden patina and a razor sharp strike. Struck with mathematical care by the dies, in other words. Pop 189; 41 finer, 40 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 3584)
Note: On Dec. 8, 1863, Director James Pollock wrote to Salmon P. Chase (Lincoln's Secretary of Treasury), recommending a 2c piece in French bronze (the alloy earlier chosen for the new cents). Pollock submitted for Chase's approval samples of two designs, one with a Washington head, the other with shield and arrows in saltire (similar to that adopted), preferring the latter -- probably because it was in lower relief. Secretary Chase concurred, but stipulated that the motto GOD OUR TRUST be changed to IN GOD WE TRUST. This wording was evidently influenced by the motto of Chase's alma mater, Brown University, IN DEO SPERAMUS, 'In God we hope.' Pollock's proposal was written into the pending Mint Bill, which became law April 22, 1864. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200
