1832 N-3 R1 Large Letters PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with darker bluish steel and olive toning on the reverse. 1833 N-4 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous olive and steel with 20% of the obverse and 10% of the reverse showing mint color. Sharply struck and very attractive. The best identifying marks, and they are insignificant, are a pair of diagonal ticks on the truncation over the 18 and a small spot of darker bluish olive toning under the E in UNITED. E-MDS with a fine die crack through the date and lower stars but without the additional crack from star 4 to star 7. This variety is sometimes called a 3/2 overdate, and in the earliest state you can see some fine repunching of either a 2 or another 3 under the second 3. There is a trace of something at the right bottom of the 3 on this example, but calling it the base of an undertype 2 would be a stretch. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Matthews-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest RB of the variety at both services. PCGS #37028. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

There are traces of mint red showing on the obverse while 15% of the reverse shows mellowed mint color. This cent offers excellent eye appeal and it looks flawless to the unaided eye. However a glass reveals numerous microscopic specks of darker toning scattered over both sides, none visible without strong magnification. In addition there are two small, light nicks under the 8 in the date and a tiny scuff under the O in OF. LDS but not quite the latest state. The spikes up from the dentils below the date are gone but the small lump at the Y in LIBERTY has not formed. A clear double profile shows from the forehead down to the chin with additional doubling on IBERTY and on stars 11 & 12. Our grade is MS60+. 1835 N-5 R2 Small 8 & Stars PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and olive with mint red covering 10% of both sides. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless creating outstanding eye appeal. The best identifying marks, and they are barely visible under strong magnification, are a tiny planchet flake midway between the tip of the nose and the nostril (as struck) and a very faint hairline right of the E in ONE. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields. The line or die crack through the base of the 835 is now dulled a bit by the flowlines and die wear, but it has not grown (which suggests that this is a die scratch rather than a crack).
